Back home, I ran into someone I hadn’t expected.

An old man, waiting near my building. Slightly hunched, trembling a little in the wind.

My father.

He asked if I’d eaten.

I cut to it.

“What do you need?”

He worked his hands together.

“Would you. Come home. Just once.”

“You said: You’re grown, don’t come back. I’ve done exactly that. And now you want me back?”

“Your sister is sick. Cancer.”

A beat of surprise.

“We’ve sold everything we can. She’s your sister. Can you help her?”

He looked exhausted and small.

“I know you’re angry with me. But I didn’t want to push you away. You’re my daughter. It broke me. I had no choice.”

“I know.”

He blinked.

The day I got my university acceptance, I was so happy.

I ran home. Journalism. My mother’s path.

I heard them in the kitchen before I opened the door.

My stepmother: “Her tuition will drain us dry. And in a few years, your daughter will need it too.”

“You’ve raised her to adulthood. Isn’t that enough?”

“I’m telling you: it’s her or me.”

I closed the door quietly. Sat on the curb for an afternoon.

The whole summer I waited.

When move-in day came, I knew the answer.

“You didn’t want your rebuilt life to fall apart again. So you chose to sacrifice me.

“As much as it hurt. You still sent me away.”

He started to say something.

I stopped him.

“I don’t blame you. I understand.”

“But as your daughter. You weren’t a terrible father. You just weren’t a good enough one.”

I picked up my phone and transferred him the money he’d given me over the years. Every bit of it.

Then a little more.

“That covers what you gave me.

“The rest is for raising me.

“After this. Don’t look for me again.”
