I almost laughed.

“Is that what you think this is? Me acting out?”

He sighed. He took my hand.

“Lena. I know you did all of this because you love me. You thought I was taking her side, giving away your things. But she was threatening to make a scene, and the camera looked old, so I gave it to her to keep the peace. You humiliated her in front of everyone. I had to do something.”

I looked at him. And felt something close to pity.

“Brendan. I don’t love you.”

He paused. His expression went cold.

“Don’t say things you don’t mean.”

“If you don’t love me, why do you always look at me like that?”

I smiled a little. Pulled my hand back. Touched his face gently, one last time.

“What a shame. I won’t be seeing this face again.”

Something shifted in his eyes.

“What are you…”

His phone rang.

Jade.

He hesitated a few seconds. Answered.

Her voice came through, dazed and exhausted.

“Brendan. I’m leaving. I’m sorry about everything. I just. Couldn’t stop being jealous of her.”

“Jade, where are you!”

“Don’t come. Go find her. She’s the one you’re spending your life with.”

He went frantic.

“Jade!”

She hung up.

He shoved the box into my arms and took off running.

I watched him disappear down the street.

I picked up the camera. And dropped it in the nearest trash can.

I was leaving too.

No point carrying useless things.
