What Isn’t Mine, I Don’t Want Chapter 06

Adrian stood there stunned, then fumbled to call back.

“Adrian, if you ask me, Nora’s just sulking to get to you.”

Sienna spoke up out of nowhere, her voice mocking.

“She probably went to the station on purpose so you’d hear that announcement.”

“Besides, she didn’t take a single thing with her. How’s she going to get home?”

Adrian paused.

He couldn’t argue with that.

For three years, the one thing Nora had wanted most was to be recognized and come home.

How could she just leave?

But for some reason, the feeling in his gut wouldn’t sit right.

After a moment, he called his assistant.

“Find out for me whether Nora went back to Hartwell.

The second you know anything, tell me.”

The assistant agreed, and the call ended.

Mrs. Sinclair, seeing the look on his face, couldn’t help asking.

“Adrian, what happened between you and Nora?”

“Why would she say she’s going back to Hartwell?”

Adrian glanced at Sienna and said it lightly.

“Same as always. Just a little friction.”

“It was actually Adrian sneaking Nora money, buying her bags and jewelry, and I caught him!”

Sienna didn’t take the cover he’d given her. If anything,

she turned snide.

“No wonder Adrian kept going out lately. Turns out he was off seeing Nora.”

“Why wouldn’t you tell me? Nora’s got such bad taste, what could she possibly pick out that’s any good?”

“Tell me next time. I could’ve helped her choose!”

The words landed, and a wave of irritation rose up in

Adrian’s chest.

Three years. Ever since Nora had been brought back to / New York, every time her name came up, Sienna reacted like she’d been stung.

He and his mother had both made it clear, more than once, that even with Nora back, there would always be a place for Sienna in this family.

And still she had to make scenes. Still she had to push.

Especially yesterday, on Nora’s birthday.

All over one stupid game, he’d spent the whole night calming Sienna down.

And it ended with his mother’s blood pressure spiking, nearly landing her in the hospital.

The endless anger and the irritation tangled together.

Adrian finally hit his limit and turned a cold look on

Sienna.

“Are you ever going to stop?”

“Nora’s my real sister. So what if I give her money to buy things?”

The sudden coldness on his face made Sienna falter for a

second.

Then she scowled hard.

“Adrian, are you snapping at me right now? Over Nora?”

“I really don’t get why you always have to take her side. We were a perfectly happy family before she came back.”

“Since you brought her home, how many times have we fought now?”

Adrian’s face went dark, his voice cold as ice.

“You want to talk about taking sides? Search your conscience and ask who I’ve actually been taking the side

of.”

“Because of you, Nora hasn’t been home in three years.”

“Yesterday on her birthday, you went out of your way to

needle her with all that, and did I say a word to you about

it?”

“And now you’re at it again.”

“She needled me first!”

Sienna suddenly broke down.

Not once in her whole life had Adrian spoken to her like

this.

She screamed it, unable to take it.

“It was just a birthday. Why did you have to invite all your friends to celebrate it for her?”

“And the things she said, watching the sun rise at four in the mountains, planning a funeral by herself, that’s just rubbing it in our faces, isn’t it?”

“How can you only get on me and never on her?”

Adrian pressed his thin lips together and looked at Sienna, steady and long.

For the first time it struck him that this sister of his wasn’t the slightest bit as sweet as she’d been when she was small. Just spoiled, beyond all reason.

Seeing Sienna worked up, Mrs. Sinclair hurried over to calm her down.

“Sienna, don’t get upset, I think maybe…”

“Get off me!”

“Ah!”

Before she could finish the soothing words, Sienna shoved her aside like she didn’t know her at all.

Mrs. Sinclair cried out and went down hard to the floor, the color draining from her face.

“Mom!”

Adrian’s face changed and he rushed to help her up.

The second Sienna realized what she’d done, she went stiff and small.

“Mom, I lost my temper just now, I’m sorry…

She moved to help, and Adrian shoved her off hard.

“Get away! Don’t touch my mother!”

Two days in a row now, his mother had been hurt because of Sienna.

Adrian was done.

He shouted, a vein jumping at his temple.

“How far do you have to push before you’re satisfied? Do you really think the Sinclairs can’t work without you?”

The shove sent Sienna stumbling, and something dropped in her chest.

She scrambled to explain before she’d even caught her balance.

“Adrian, that was an accident just now…”

“We’ve spoiled you too much all these years. From now on, we are done letting you lead us around by the nose!”

Adrian eased his mother onto the couch and pulled out his phone.

“I’m calling Nora right now. I’m telling her to come home.”

Sienna froze where she stood, in disbelief. She wanted to stop him, and the look in his eyes scared her off.

Mrs. Sinclair rubbed her knee and, for the first time,

didn’t take Sienna’s side.

“Bring her back. It’s for the best.”

“Blood is thicker than water. She comes first.”

When those words came out, Sienna felt like she’d fallen through ice, her face awful.

But before Adrian could even dial, his assistant called him.

He picked up, impatient.

“What is it?”

The assistant’s voice was urgent.

“Mr. Sinclair, I tracked down the ticket Miss Nora

booked. She really did go back to Hartwell!”

Crack.

The phone slid out of Adrian’s hand and shattered to pieces on the floor.
