The Night Before I Became His Wife, the Night He Became a Father Chapter 05

Damian had never seen Ivy look so lifeless before.

All this time, no matter how poor he pretended to be and no matter what hardships they faced together, she had always been like a little sun, bright and full of life.

After all these years together, even someone as cold by nature as he was had been deeply changed by her.

But now, her skin was almost translucent, and her clothes were soaked with blood.

No matter how many times he called her name, she did not respond.

Watching that man, Miles Grant, carry her into the operating room sent jealousy burning through Damian’s chest until it felt like his organs were being scorched from the inside out.

But Nina kept clinging to his arm, sobbing nonstop, leaving him no way to go after Ivy and take her back.

For the first time, he found this woman unbearably annoying.

She was always crying, always weak.

She clung to him like a helpless parasite, taking from him endlessly, from his body to his money.

His phone buzzed.

Ivy’s clear, gentle voice reminder played from his phone.

“It’s lunchtime. Make sure you eat properly, okay?”

Damian’s grip on the phone tightened, and his fingertips grew colder by the second.

He was a picky eater, and his stomach had always been bad.

She would not even buy herself decent pads, yet she never hesitated to spend money on pricey imported stomach remedies and stomach-friendly meals to nurse him back to health.

She had even set reminders on his phone so he would eat on time.

And her love had never stopped there.

It was in the perfectly pressed shirts that always hung in his closet. It was in her hand gently patting his back when he got drunk with friends and threw up over the toilet. It was in the ever-changing breakfasts, the toothpaste already squeezed onto his toothbrush before he washed up, and the little notes of encouragement he sometimes found tucked into his coat pockets.

The memories came crashing over him, enormous and relentless, until regret nearly split his skull open.

At that thought, Damian could no longer withstand the panic. He shoved Nina away and bolted toward the operating room.

He had to see Ivy right now.

But a white coat appeared in front of him, cold and speckled with blood.

“Mr. Davenport, I’m sorry for your loss. We did everything we could.”

A heavy tear struck the floor.

Damian’s knees buckled, and he sagged against the cold wall.

“I knew you really loved me. I knew it wasn’t for my money.”

“I wanted to marry you. I wanted to give you everything I had.”

“But Ivy, you’re punishing me this way on purpose, aren’t you?”
