Evander watched me force myself to remain calm, then suddenly reached out.

His fingers brushed lightly against the corner of my eye.

It was an unexpectedly intimate gesture.

I flinched, but he steadied me with a hand on my

shoulder.

“Don’t move.”

His voice was low.

“Your makeup is smudged.”

I went still.

Then I heard him continue.

“I don’t need you to do anything for me.”

“Hannah Moretti, I’ve had my eye on you for a long time.”

“Three years ago, when Dorian’s company was failing, it was the business plan you wrote that secured his first round of funding.”

“Even back then, I wondered how a woman as brilliant as you could choose a man like him.”

I froze.

He had known. All this time.

“I never interfered, because you weren’t ready to wake up.”

Evander leaned back against the seat, his gaze deep and unreadable.

“But today, you reached out your hand. I’m not putting

you back where you were.”

Meanwhile, the ballroom had devolved into complete pandemonium.

Guests were streaming out, eager to distance themselves from the Lombardi family’s implosion.

Mrs. Lombardi was loaded into an ambulance.

Dorian stood frozen in place, looking completely hollowed out.

The floor was a mess.

The check, now smudged with dirt from being stepped on, still lay over the cheap ring.

Chloe stood beside him, sobbing as she clutched his

sleeve.

“Dorian, you have to believe me! That video is fake!”

“Hannah must have hired someone to edit it! She’s trying to destroy us!”

Dorian slowly turned his head and looked at her.

A few seconds later, he lifted his hand and slapped her, hard, across the face.
