My Bestie Stole My Childhood Love, I Married a Billionaire Chapter 07

Ethan opened his mouth. Watched me dial Chloe on repeat. Finally, “She doesn’t pick up when she’s mad. Don’t waste your time. Even I don’t know where she went.”

Something snapped.

“How could you let her leave? You’re the one who’s always saying she’s this fragile little thing who can’t survive on her own—and you didn’t even stop her? She’s got no one here. The airport’s two towns over. What if something bad happens—”

Ethan’s jaw locked. “You want to blame me? Fine. But if you hadn’t been starting drama every single day, she never would’ve pushed me for an answer. You’ve always resented her. I finally shut it down. What, that’s still not enough for you?”

I called everyone I knew. Nothing.

At 3 a.m., Nate sent a photo.

Chloe, wrapped in a blanket on an airport bench.

[Is this your friend?]

[I can have my assistant put her up somewhere.]

I texted back, shaking: [Thank you. I’m coming.]

Chloe saw me approach. Tension flickered across her exhausted face.

I didn’t ask questions. Just said, “After your exam, I’m moving out. Faculty housing. Chloe—you were my best friend. That never

depended on anyone else. Focus on your applications. Everything else can wait.”

She gave me a strange look. Half-smiled. “You feel sorry for me? Homeless and rejected by my childhood best friend.”

“No. I don’t.”

Her eyes went red. Long pause. Then she pulled me into a hug.

“Vivian. I can’t be your friend after this. So this is my last apology. I’m sorry I left you alone at the visitor center that night. Being alone in the dark… it’s cold. Don’t forgive me.”

I didn’t hug back. But my eyes stung.

After that, Chloe locked herself in her room until GRE week, when she flew to her home state to take the test.

Ethan never came around. Surprised me.

Once she was gone, I looked at apartments. Mentioned it to Nate.

“I have a place in Oakhaven. You can stay there—rent later.”

He sent the address. Close to school. Easy commute. I said yes.
