They dragged me onto that familiar SUV, where my daughter Elena was sitting in the car seat.

The second she saw me being thrown into the backseat, she burst into tears.

“Daddy, I don’t wanna sit next to this ugly lady! She smells bad!”

Atticus glanced at her in the rearview mirror, forcing a stern expression to scold her.

“Elena, that’s not polite. This is your mom.”

Elena wrinkled her nose and huffed.

“She’s not my mom!” She muttered quietly. “Only Aunt Serena deserves to be my mom.”

Her voice was soft, but it was loud enough for everyone in the car to hear.

Cassian let out a scoff, shooting me a look of contempt.

Atticus’s hands tightened around the steering wheel as he tried to explain.

“Elena just doesn’t know you well yet. She’ll warm up to you once you spend more time together.”

I turned to look out the window, my voice flat. “It’s fine. I wasn’t her mom anyway. Didn’t you say that

yourself?”

Six years ago, I’d been in this same car.

Elena had just turned one, and Atticus had said those words to me straight to my face.

“Arabella, do you really think you’re fit to be a mother right now?”

“Elena’s just a pup. What does she know? If she wants to call Serena ‘Mom’, let her. Do you really have to

make a scene in front of her?”

The image of Atticus’s angry face flashed through my mind.

We drove the rest of the way in silence, and before I knew it, we’d entered Ashenfang Pack’s territory.

The house I’d once decorated with so much care in the Alpha’s estate was unrecognizable.

The roses in the garden were gone, replaced by tulips.

The swing under the tree was gone too, and the tree itself had been cut down.

Everything had changed.

I scanned the area coldly, then lowered my eyes and followed them inside.

Atticus opened a door in the corner of the house. It was covered in dust, and there were cobwebs in the

corners.

I coughed, covering my nose, and waved a hand to clear the dust in front of me.

“Your old room was turned into Serena’s music room. You’ll have to make do here for now.” He said.

“Once things settle down…”

I cut him off before he could finish. “No need. This is fine.”

My only real home would be a handful of ashes.

It didn’t matter to me if the room was nice or not.

Cassian hated this indifferent look of mine, the way I acted like they were all bullying me.

He rolled his eyes and scoffed.

“Atticus, let her stay here if she wants. After all these years, she’s still got that annoying, dramatic streak.”

Atticus sighed deeply but didn’t argue.

“Stay here as long as you want.”

I nodded and closed the door behind me.

I couldn’t read the look in Atticus’s eyes. Hadn’t he been the one to kick me out of Ashenfang Pack back

then?

What was up with this guilty act now?

I couldn’t figure it out, so I stopped trying.

My legs gave out, and I collapsed onto the small single bed. A sharp pain washed over my entire body.

My face turned pale, and cold sweat soaked through my pillow.

Knock knock.

A knock on the door woke me up.

I forced myself to stand and opened the door. Cassian was standing there, holding a thin blanket.

“Who are you trying to pity with this sorry act?” He snapped when he saw how pale I looked.

He threw the blanket at my feet.

“Here. Don’t go getting sick and blaming it on Serena.”

“And I’m warning you, no funny business. Don’t go bothering Serena. The position of Ashenfang Pack’s Luna

will always be hers. You know why we brought you back.”

Those familiar threats echoed in my ears.

I’d heard them so many times before.

I’d gone from resisting to feeling numb. Now I knew exactly how to respond.

“I know.”

I slammed the door shut.

I turned back to the bed, leaving the blanket on the floor.

A dying person didn’t care about getting sick.
