The words hit them. Jagger and Tatum froze. Finally, Jagger spoke. “How is that possible? Avery was my wife. How could she be with Uncle? And Uncle doesn’t even like women. He’s infertile. Everyone knows that.”

Mr. Hamilton looked at Jagger like he was the biggest disappointment of his life. “You ran out on your wedding. Avery remarried Beckett on the spot. Everyone in Manhattan knows this. How do you not know this?”

Jagger’s mind went blank.

After running off with Tatum, they cut all contact with Manhattan. They didn’t want to get caught. They went straight to Europe. Traveling. Living it up.

Until recently. All his cards got frozen. They were broke. Penniless. He was washing dishes for a coach ticket while I was sitting in the corner office he’d always dreamed of.

They came straight to the estate. Who had time to ask around?

“Beckett’s condition was real. But it wasn’t hopeless. These past few years, he’s seen every specialist in the country. He and Avery finally had a child.”

Mr. Hamilton’s voice broke with grief. “And now you’ve destroyed everything.”

Jagger thought of his uncle’s methods. His legs gave out. He collapsed.

Cold-faced security personnel walked in.

Jagger and Tatum started shaking. They screamed for the old man.

“Grandfather, save me. I don’t want to die…”

“Grandfather… Grandfather…”

The security team ignored their howls and dragged them away.
