“There won’t be another witch to do your switching.” I looked down at her. “My father already captured her. She’s sitting in the dungeon as we speak.”

Elara’s entire body went rigid. Her eyes stretched wide with disbelief.

“You— you—” Her throat produced a sound like a broken bellows. She stared at me, unblinking.

The gentleness drained from my face in an instant, replaced by something cold and absolute.

I leaned down and whispered into her ear. “Elara, did you really think you could make a secret deal with a witch and end up queen of the world?”

She began to tremble violently.

“The moment I found out you’d been in contact with the witch, I started investigating you.”

I tucked the blanket around her shoulders like I was telling a bedtime story. “You were never a first-time customer. “When I found the witch, do you know what she told me?”

Hope erupted in Elara’s eyes like a flare. “I’ll reverse it! I’ll reverse it! I’ll never do another exchange!”

Elara’s face went the color of ash. She finally remembered exactly what she had said to the witch in that forest.

Elara clawed at the hospital gown over her chest, her eyes drowning in regret and despair.

I looked down at her. There was no victor’s glee in my eyes. Only calm.

I turned and walked toward the door.
