Elijah drove back to the Midnight pack house, hollowed out.

Kelly was still there.

Bruised and bloody from her own beating, she waited at the door.

“Elijah, you’re back! What happened to you? Did someone hurt you too?”

She ran at him.

“Get off.”

He shoved her away.

She grabbed his arm, sobbing. “Elijah, I’m sorry. I’ll be good. I’ll be your dog. Whatever you want. Just don’t send me away.”

Without Elijah’s money and gifts, she had nothing.

She’d maxed out credit cards to land him. Now she was drowning in debt. And Elijah had taken back everything he gave her.

“Leave me alone. You disgust me. If I see you again, I’ll kill you.”

His voice was ice. His eyes made her shrink back.

But she wasn’t done.

His phone rang.

“Alpha, get to the office now. Every wolf pack that promised to work with us backed out. The employees are all quitting. They say the company is dead. They cleaned out the office to cover their pay.”

Elijah staggered.

Kelly’s face went pale too.

She had bet everything on him.

No. He still had money. If she stayed loyal now, he would see it.

Elijah drove to the office.

Kelly followed in a taxi.

The office was empty. Stripped bare.

Elijah stood in the middle of it, gray-faced.

“Alpha. Thank God you’re here.”

“Where is everyone?”

“Gone, Alpha. You forgot to pay this month’s wages.”

“I would never stiff you. I have money. Call them back.”

“They won’t come.” Beta hesitated. “I heard the Moon Shadow Pack offered them higher pay. They all jumped ship.”

“Audrey.”

Elijah’s fists clenched.

“Why are you still here? You didn’t leave?”

“I’ve been with you for years, Alpha. I’m loyal. About last month’s pay…”

“I’ll have the accountant send it.”

“The accountant quit too, Alpha.”

“Fine. I’ll pay you myself.”

Elijah pulled out his phone to make a transfer.

He had less than ten thousand dollars.

“No. That’s not possible. Where’s my money?”

He checked every account.

Empty.

Credit card bills flooded in. Past due.

“Where did my money go?”

Kelly whispered, “That bitch Audrey must have taken it.”

“Audrey.”

Rage boiled in his chest.

She had been planning this. Cheating on him. Stealing from him. Poaching his employees.

He had thought he was the one who messed up. But no. She was the villain all along.
