I forced myself to look away and kicked my horse’s side.

“Giddy up.”

The horse broke into a gallop. The wind rushed past my face, easing the sharp pain in my chest a little.

We were practicing jump obstacles that day. Three rail barriers stood ahead of me.

The horse leaped high right before we reached the first barrier.

The straps holding the saddle snapped out of nowhere.

I had no time to react. I tumbled off the horse completely.

Snow took control of my body instantly to soften the fall. I shifted into my pure white wolf form.

The other horses panicked at the sight of a wolf and began to stampede wildly. Their hooves could crush me at any moment.

Damian was supposed to protect me. He was trained in animal handling, which was why Father assigned him to my lessons.

He should have checked my saddle and kept a close eye on me.

But all his attention was fixed on Selina. He did not even notice I had fallen.

I did not need his protection anymore.

Snow darted nimbly through the panicked herd. We chased after the lead black stallion, the fastest horse in the yard.

I leaped onto its back in one fluid motion. The stallion reared up in fright.

I shifted back into human form, gripping the reins tight and pressing my legs firmly against the horse’s belly.

The stallion gradually calmed under my control. It circled the yard steadily, and the rest of the herd followed its lead, falling into orderly lines.

Wild power surged inside me. Snow howled in delight, reveling in the thrill of dominance.

I rode past Damian with the entire herd trailing behind. I caught a flash of awe in his eyes.

Selina, held tight in his arms, stared at me with clear jealousy.

I slowed the horse to a stop and climbed down. Damian held out his hand to help me.

I pretended not to see it and jumped down on my own. A flicker of disappointment crossed his face.

I had wanted to look impressive, but my legs gave out the second my feet hit the ground.

My wolf leg had been trampled in the chaos earlier. The pain hit me all at once.

I collapsed to the ground. I heard Damian shout my name in alarm. He shifted into his wolf form and moved to catch me.

“Princess!”

I pushed him away and limped off on my own.

I could smell Selina’s scent all over him. It made me sick.

Damian volunteered to take care of me while I recovered over the next few days. He was surprisingly gentle and attentive.

Plain water appeared by my side before I even grew thirsty. The second I frowned in pain, painkillers were placed in my hand.

He always handed me mint candies afterward to get rid of the bitter taste of medicine.

His thoughtful gestures made me foolishly hope he cared for me, even just a little.

But I knew the truth. He acted this way for Selina’s sake.

His eyes overflowed with love whenever he looked at her.

I guessed they were fated mates, bound by the Moon Goddess herself. That was the only way a cold man like him could turn so passionate.

Father had once told me any promised mate could leave if they found their fated mate.

I decided to set them free. On my twentieth birthday, the day I got engaged to Asher, I would ask Father to let Damian and Selina be together.

I would take the throne that same day, and the power of the kingdom would be mine at last.
