Lexi pushed herself up on one elbow and yawned.
“What’s wrong?”
Ethan ignored her. He grabbed Lexi’s phone off the nightstand.
“Hey!”
She reached for it, but he’d already unlocked it with face ID.
He opened Lexi’s thread with Taylor. And went completely still.
The screen was full of messages Lexi had sent her. Page after page of them.
“My boyfriend got me a necklace today. Cute, right~”
“Babe, we got a hotel room last night. He’s so creative. Lol have you and Ethan even tried anything yet? When you get here I’ll have Ethan take some notes.”
Ethan’s face went dark.
“Who told you to send her any of that? Did I not make it clear — what we’re doing cannot get back to her. Ever.”
Lexi’s voice went unsteady.
“I never said it was you. I never used your name, not once–”
“I just… I couldn’t help it, I wanted to share–”
“Share.”
He almost laughed.
“You shared how you were sleeping with me to my actual girlfriend. Lexi. Are you serious right now?”
“I spoil you too much, don’t I.”
Lexi’s eyes filled up.
But Ethan had zero interest in that face right now.
He looked back at the screen.
He noticed the conversation had just stopped. A few months back, Taylor had gone completely quiet. Not a single reply after that.
His heart started hammering. He looked at Lexi hard.
“Did you two have a falling out? Why hasn’t she responded to you in two months?”
Lexi blinked.
“No? We didn’t fight.”
“She just… stopped replying. I don’t know why. Maybe she was so happy about her acceptance she forgot about us–”
Ethan stopped listening. He used Lexi’s phone to call Taylor.
“I’m sorry, this number cannot be reached–”
Lexi was blocked too.
Ethan’s stomach dropped.
His mind started running.
How did this happen?
Did Taylor know about them?
When did she find out? How much did she know?
No. Maybe she didn’t know anything.
Maybe she was just furious about him going silent all summer. Maybe it was just a fight.
He held onto that. Picked up the hotel room’s landline and dialed a number he’d had memorized for years.
The line rang.
