Fifteen Years Wasted, Now I’m Done Chapter 12

I sucked in a breath. Slammed my elbow backward. Hard.

Solid contact with his chest.

Ryan grunted in pain. His grip loosened.

I wrenched free. Slapped the light switch. The room lit up. Finally saw what Ryan looked like.

He was wrecked.

Gaunt. No color in his face. His dress shirt hung off his thin

frame. And on his chest–where I’d just struck–a faint stain of

blood was spreading.

Barefoot on the carpet. Shoes in hand. I walked deeper into the room.

Ryan followed. Step for step.

“Mr. Cartwright. This is trespassing. Leave now or I’ll call the police.”

He stopped.

“We’re married…”

I turned. Flat voice. “That’s why I came back. Not just for the

products.”

“Divorce*

Ryan went rigid.

Disbelief flooded his face. His eyes reddened. Then something wet slipped down.

“Hailey… we never even had a real wedding…”

“We never truly became husband and wife…”

“And whose fault is that?” I cut him off. Let a mocking, almost cruel tone creep in. “Thank you, Mr. Cartwright.”

“Thank you for freeing me from the hell of marriage. Letting me focus on my career. Reach the top.”

He stumbled over his words. Couldn’t form a sentence.

My patience died. I grabbed the ashtray off the coffee table and hurled it at him.

“Get out!”
