He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 38

The Whitaker living room was as stuffy and silent as a tomb, the air thick with the scent of lemon polish and decaying pride. Garrett stood before the massive stone fireplace, his hair a mess, his linen shirt wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot. But when he looked at me, he still wore the same mask of wounded arrogance.
“You’re going to make a public statement,” he said, his voice hoarse. “You’ll say you were mentally unstable, that Noah Caldwell took advantage of you. You do that, and I’ll drop everything. We can wipe the slate clean.”
I almost laughed.
He still thought this was about him, a drama that could be resolved if I just bowed my head and took the blame.
“Mentally unstable because you abandoned me at the marriage license bureau?” I asked, my calm voice echoing in the cavernous room. “Garrett, you walked away. This is all on you.”
“Because Sloane needed me!” he roared, as if that were a sacred, unassailable truth. “Why can’t you understand that? You were always the understanding one!”
“Oh, I understand now,” I said. “I finally understand that when a man calls you ‘the understanding one,’ he just means you’re the one he’s willing to sacrifice.”
