He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 31

“I’m going with you.”
The words were out of my mouth before Noah even ended the call, my tone leaving no room for argument.
He frowned, a flicker of disapproval in his eyes. “Maya, that’s not necessary. This could be a trap…”
“She wants you because you’re Garrett’s enemy. And I am the center of this war.” I looked him straight in the eye, my voice firmer than it had ever been. “No one is making decisions for me anymore. No one is gathering information about my life on my behalf. I’m going.”
Noah studied me for a long moment. The worry in his eyes slowly gave way to a grudging admiration. He nodded.

We met Sloane at a dimly lit bar on the outskirts of town. She was no longer the fragile porcelain doll I remembered. She was wearing expensive clothes, but they were wrinkled. Her makeup was smeared, and her eyes were red-rimmed and filled with a raw, desperate resentment.
“He cut me off,” she said, downing a glass of whiskey before we had even sat down. Her voice was hoarse. “The second the Whitakers realized I was a liability instead of an asset in their war against you, they cut me off. The trust fund, the apartment, everything.”
I looked at her, and what I felt wasn’t satisfaction, but a strange, hollow sadness. “Sloane, I’m sorry.”
