He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 26

The pretense of warmth vanished from his face.
“First,” he said, his voice like ice, “you will agree to the annulment.”
My eyes widened. “You can’t be serious—”
“Oh, but I am.” He pulled a manila folder from his briefcase and tossed it onto the table. “Look at this.”
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Inside were two signed affidavits. I knew the signatures. Ashley and Ben. My bridesmaid and his groomsman.
In black and white, they described in lurid detail how I had been “emotionally distraught and speaking incoherently” in Las Vegas, how I had “hysterically latched onto a man I barely knew.” Every word was designed to paint me as a deranged, vengeful woman.
The blood drained from my face.
“So now you have a choice,” Garrett said, leaning back in his chair like a predator admiring his trapped prey. “You agree to the annulment, and we end this with a shred of dignity. Or we go to court, and I have your closest friends testify in front of all of Charleston what a pathetic joke you’ve become.”
Panic, cold and absolute, washed over me. He was going to use the people I trusted to destroy me, to publicly execute my reputation.
Just then, the door to the private room flew open with a splintering crack.
