He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 25

His hypocrisy was a greasy film I could almost feel through the phone.
“Maybe… maybe we should meet?” he coaxed, his voice dropping. “Just us. We can figure this out, make it all stop. I don’t want to see you get hurt.”
I knew it was a trap.
A trap baited with the betrayal of my friends.
But I also knew it was my only chance to see for myself who was holding the knife to my back.
“Fine,” I heard myself say. “Where?”

I agreed to meet him at a downtown restaurant we used to go to. It was public, it was busy. I thought it would be safe.
But when I arrived, Garrett steered me past the bustling dining room toward a private room at the back.
I stopped at the door. “Why in here?”
“We need to talk, really talk, without interruptions.” He turned, a strange, determined light in his eyes. “Please, Maya. For old times’ sake.”
I hesitated for a beat, then stepped inside.
He followed me in and shut the door.
The lock clicked, sealing us in, cutting off the noise from outside and any chance of escape.
