He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 14

I nodded, following him into the sprawling master suite. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, Charleston’s quiet nightscape twinkled. In the center of the room, a king-size bed was turned down, invitingly soft.
My suitcase was already in the corner. His things—a wristwatch, a book—were on the nightstand. Our lives, suddenly intertwined.
“Maya,” he said from behind me, his voice laced with a caution so faint it was almost imperceptible. “I know this is… a lot. All at once. We don’t have to… rush anything.”
I turned. He stood a few feet away, giving me space, but his eyes were locked on me, so intense I couldn’t look away.
“I…” I opened my mouth, but no words came out.
Just then, his phone rang again.
Not a vibration this time, but a shrill ringtone that shattered the tense, quiet air in the room. He frowned, glanced at the screen, and then did something I didn’t expect. He silenced the call and placed the phone facedown on the dresser.
“Tonight, it’s just us,” he said, his voice a low command. “No interruptions.”
He held his hand out to me, an open invitation. But as my gaze traveled from his hand to his face, I saw a flicker of something in his eyes I couldn’t name.
Was it worry about the Whitakers? Or… hesitation about the rushed marriage between us?
