He Wanted an Heir, So I Gave Him Ashes Chapter 42

If she had left the Walker family earlier, even if she had to start over with nothing but her Ivy League degree, she would have been spared the last three years.

That identity had brought her convenience.

It had also been a very heavy chain.

Rhett’s parents received the news and were on the next flight.

Old Mr. Walker called the moment the email was sent, his voice tight with panic. Rhett’s mother was sobbing in the background.

When Ellie saw them at the hospital, they seemed to have aged ten years overnight, their faces carved with despair.

Ellie, however, was brighter than ever.

“Rhett wronged you, Ellie.” Rhett’s mother gripped her hand, tears pouring down her face. “The Walker family wronged you.”

Ellie held her cold fingers.

“Just be with him.”

She didn’t say Rhett’s name.

Cole watched all of this from the side, then quietly slipped into the hallway.

Ellie followed him out.

“Are you leaving?”

Cole nodded, his gaze lingering on her.

“There’s still a lot to handle in Texas.”

Ellie’s heart felt suddenly hollow. She thought of the breakfasts he made, the scattered childhood stories he had told her.

He took a key from his pocket and placed it in her palm.

“The apartment is yours for as long as you want.”

She should have left California immediately. There was nothing here for her anymore.

But when she thought of the helpless, bewildered older couple in the ward, she nodded.

“I’ll stay and help them handle things.”
