He Wanted an Heir, So I Gave Him Ashes Chapter 39

Old Mr. Walker suddenly remembered something Daisy had once said.

It had been one afternoon. Holding the child, she had said with an almost innocent cruelty, “He would lose his entire kingdom for that woman.”

Looking back, the words seemed like an icy prophecy.

Rhett waited outside Ellie’s apartment for three days and never saw her. Like a ghost, he wandered the streets of an unfamiliar city. Every call he made went straight to a cold, automated voice.

Just as he was about to collapse, he saw her on the financial news in the hotel lobby.

On the screen, she was giving a speech at a technology summit, confident and dazzling, surrounded by capital and praise. She looked so well. So well that it seemed as if a man named Rhett Walker had never existed.

Only then did he fully understand.

She wasn’t throwing a tantrum.

She was avoiding him.

Forever.

In the past, whenever she had a success like this, she would throw herself into his arms like a child, demanding his praise.

Now, he didn’t even have the right to appear before her.

An indescribable bitterness rose from the bottom of his heart, drowning him. Days of sleeplessness and a hollowed-out despair made his vision suddenly go black. He collapsed on the crowded street.

On the other side of the country, Ellie had gradually grown accustomed to Cole’s care.

She lived in his spacious penthouse. Every day was thoughtfully arranged. They even discussed Vance-AgriTech’s business plan together. It was so peaceful it felt like a dream.

Until the hospital called.

The call came to Cole’s phone.

He glanced at the caller ID and put it on speaker, as if handling an ordinary work email. He did it on purpose. He wanted Ellie to know that he was different from Rhett, that he had nothing to hide.

“Hello, are you a friend or family member of Mr. Rhett Walker? You’re the only emergency contact we have,” the nurse said, her voice calm and clear.

Ellie’s fingers paused on the document she was reading.

“Mr. Walker was just brought into the emergency room. He collapsed on the street. His condition is not good. We need someone to come immediately—”

After Cole hung up, he looked at Ellie.

Her fingers curled, gripping the edge of the proposal, but her face was a blank mask. As if nothing had happened, she lowered her head and continued to study the charts and data.

Cole asked her, “Are you going?”

Ellie lifted her head. Her voice was light, but the end of it trembled.

“Go where? To see Rhett? This has nothing to do with me.”
