He Wanted an Heir, So I Gave Him Ashes Chapter 14

Rhett’s expression changed.

He searched every room, upstairs and down.

Nothing.

Ellie was gone.

He rushed downstairs and found the old butler polishing silverware.

“Where did she sleep last night? Why hasn’t the guest room bed been touched?”

The butler set down his work. “Sir, Mrs. Walker’s things were moved in as you ordered.”

“As for why they weren’t unpacked, that was Miss Daisy’s instruction. She said Madam doesn’t like others touching her things, so everyone was to put the boxes down and leave.”

Rhett hadn’t expected Daisy to take matters into her own hands.

But she had always been so soft-spoken. He figured she probably meant well. After all, Beau had only damaged a few drawings, and Ellie had lost her temper with a child.

He suppressed the knot of discomfort in his gut. “Then where is she? Did she go out?”

The butler shook his head. “I don’t know, sir.” He asked tentatively, “Shall I call and check?”

Rhett thought about it, then refused.

Ellie leaving without a word was just a tantrum. If he caved and went chasing after her, she’d only become more unreasonable. What if she took her anger out on Beau again?

As he thought this, his chest grew heavy.

He went into the bathroom, his mind filled with the image of Ellie’s disappointed face, the way the light had gone out of her eyes after he’d hit her.

If she just wanted him to grovel, he’d wait until she came to her senses.

As he was washing his face, a pair of arms wrapped around him from behind. The familiar fragrance and soft touch made his tense nerves relax instantly.

Rhett blurted out without thinking.

“Ellie, stop messing around.”

The arms immediately stiffened.
