He Wanted an Heir, So I Gave Him Ashes Chapter 09

The servant who rushed in at the sound of my voice lowered her head, her own voice trembling with fear.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Walker. Mr. Rhett said… he said young Master Beau could play anywhere in the main house.”

I pulled the boy away, desperate to see how much of my life’s work had been destroyed. Those documents were the proof of everything I had accomplished, the foundation of my future.

Before I could even assess the damage, Beau started wailing at the top of his lungs.

“What did you do to my son?!”

A shrill accusation cut through the air.

Daisy rushed in, flanked by two tall, burly ranch foremen—the men Rhett had personally assigned to “protect” his precious son.

The moment Beau saw his mother, his cries grew louder, more confident. Like an enraged little animal, he turned and shoved the only photo frame on the table to the floor.

It was the only picture of Rhett and me in the entire house.

The glass shattered. A jagged shard flew up and sliced my arm, a line of blood instantly welling to the surface.

Beau was still screaming at me.

“Bad woman! It’s all you! Daddy said your things shouldn’t even be here!”

I instinctively reached for him, trying to stop him from destroying anything else, but two powerful hands clamped down on my arms.

I froze, looking at the two foremen in disbelief.

“You don’t stop him, but you stop me?”

One of them spoke in a low, expressionless voice.

“Sorry, Mrs. Walker. Mr. Rhett’s orders. Young Master Beau’s safety comes first. We’re to restrain anyone who might pose a risk.”

My eyes widened. An icy hand squeezed my heart.

Rhett had been guarding against me.

In my own home, I was the one who needed to be “controlled.”

I struggled, but the arms were like iron clamps. They didn’t budge. I could feel the last, ridiculous illusion of marital affection draining away, drop by drop, with the blood seeping from my arm.

Just then, heavy footsteps sounded at the door.

Rhett was back.

Daisy’s eyes flickered. She pulled Beau to her side and, when she thought no one was looking, pinched his arm hard, several times.

Beau’s wails immediately rose in pitch, transforming from a spoiled tantrum into real, pained howling.

Daisy clutched her son and rushed to Rhett, her own eyes on the verge of tears. She held up Beau’s reddened palm and showed him the fresh purple marks on his arm.

“Rhett, look… Beau just accidentally messed up her papers, and she tried to hit him.”

Her voice trembled with fear. “How can I leave him here? Rhett, we have to go. It’s too dangerous.”

Seeing the marks on Beau’s arm and hearing his heart-wrenching cries, Rhett’s anger exploded.

He saw me, pinned by the foremen. He saw the blood on my arm. He saw the mess on the floor.

But his gaze landed on his son’s supposed “injuries.”

He knew his men would never have laid a hand on me unless I had truly tried to hurt someone.

He strode toward me, his dark eyes stabbing into my face.

“Ellie, why would you do this?”
