Reborn as the Romance Heroine, I Only Aim for First Place Chapter 09

The inspection visit was supposed to be a good thing. Principal Sanders had been in line for a district-level promotion.

But a good thing had turned into a disaster, and for the foreseeable future, that promotion was out of the question.

Principal Sanders was furious. He could not blame me, the victim, so he took all his anger out on Chelsea.

Chelsea received a major disciplinary mark on her permanent school record.

She also had to apologize publicly at Monday morning’s all-school assembly.

At first, Chelsea claimed she was sick and refused to come to school.

Principal Sanders hardened his stance too. She could take as many sick days as she wanted, but the moment she came back to school, the first thing she would do was make that apology.

Otherwise, she could stay gone for good, because the school would start expulsion proceedings.

Chelsea cried until her whole face was swollen. Red-faced and humiliated, she stood on the auditorium stage, the same place where honor students usually gave speeches, and read her apology aloud.

She looked utterly miserable.

Evan and Wyatt watched her from below, both looking heartbroken for her.

The other students whispered among themselves.

“That’s her? The one who stole someone’s admission ticket?”

“Yeah. I heard she’s Tessa’s cousin too. Doing that to your own family is even worse.”

“She’s so ugly. Guess her face really does match her rotten personality.”

The System was barely holding itself together.

“Why are you humiliating the female supporting rival like this? What are the male lead and the second male lead supposed to think of you?”

“They’ll think you’re petty and vicious. How are they supposed to fall in love with you?”

“Oh,” I said, completely unconcerned. “That’s exactly who I am. You’re only finding out now?”

The System sobbed. It probably knew arguing with me was useless, so it went on mute in despair.

…

That evening, I was about to go home when someone grabbed me and dragged me into an alley.

Wyatt glared at me fiercely.

“Why would you do that to Chelsea?”

“You only missed one exam. It didn’t even matter. But what about

her?”

“She’s been traumatized. She said you ruined her life.”

“She said, she said, she said—what, is she your dad?” I snapped impatiently. “Do you like her just because you think she saved you once?”

Wyatt sneered.

“Yes. She’s that kind. That’s why everyone likes her.”

“Unlike you. You’re so vicious that no one likes you, and you deserve it.”

I rolled my eyes and pulled my phone from my pocket.

“The person who saved you that day wasn’t kind, innocent Chelsea. It was vicious little me. I called 911 for you. My dad’s card got hit with a $300 ambulance copay, and I spent another $18 on antiseptic and gauze. If you hadn’t brought it up, I almost would’ve forgotten to ask you to pay me back.”

Wyatt’s eyes sharpened.

“That’s impossible. Stop making things up—”

The next second, he saw the payment records on my phone.

The pharmacy.

The hospital.

The date and time matched the day he had been injured.

His pupils contracted sharply, and he took an instinctive step back.

“That’s impossible. You never told me. Why didn’t you tell me?”

He staggered slightly, looking as if he had been struck by something he could not accept.

He no longer mentioned standing up for Chelsea.

I stepped forward, looked up at him, and mocked him.

“So you fall for whoever saves you? If a guy had saved you that day, would you switch teams for him?”

“If a dog had saved you, would you screw the dog too?”

“I would’ve been better off saving a dog,” I said derisively. “If I’d known, I should’ve let you die here that day. Talk about bad luck.”

The System muttered quietly, “You really do talk too harshly.”

“And how can you tell him yourself? According to the plot, he’s supposed to find out later on his own. The female lead is supposed to do good deeds without taking credit. She can’t say it herself.”

I was speechless.

“I have a mouth. Why can’t I use it?”

Wyatt was still standing there with a blank look in his eyes.

Before I left, I kindly reminded him, “Don’t forget to pay me back.”
