The Day the Don’s Heiress Lost Her Womb Chapter 01

The Day the Don’s Heiress Lost Her Womb Chapter 01 The Godfather’s Approval

For three days, I had not filed a single expense request.

That was what finally made my husband, the Godfather, call me.

“I signed off on your D&C surgery. Remember, behave yourself, and I can give you anything.”

He did not know I had signed the divorce papers an hour before his call.

No one would believe it either.

As the wife of Ravenport’s most feared mafia boss, I still needed the housekeeper’s approval to buy a bottle of water.

A week earlier, my ectopic pregnancy had ruptured. I miscarried and nearly bled out. From the hospital bed, I begged Vera to approve 500,000 dollars for surgery.

She tore up my form in front of me.

“It’s only a miscarriage. Rest, and you’ll recover. Why spend that much? Denied.”

Kane’s cold voice kept coming through the phone.

I lowered my head and coughed blood into my palm.

Fine.

It wasn’t as if I had many days left.

I had to hold the wall when I came out of the gynecology office.

The doctor’s words would not leave my head.

“You waited too long. Your uterus can’t be saved. You won’t be able to have children. There’s nothing else we can do.”

My legs were weak when I entered the study.

Kane Wood sat behind the desk, signing papers.

Vera stood beside him, fixing his tie with the ease of a wife.

I stopped at the door and said, “Kane, let’s divorce.”

He did not raise his head.

He only laughed, low and dismissive.

“Another tantrum because I skipped dinner last night? Elena, don’t use divorce to get attention.”

I pressed my hand against my aching abdomen. “I’m serious. I want a divorce.”

Kane frowned and reached for me.

I stepped away.

His hand stopped in midair. His expression went cold.

“I know the miscarriage upset you, but treatment can’t be rushed. This is for your own good. It’s only 500,000 dollars. I already told Vera to approve it.”

He sounded annoyed.

Then Vera’s name softened him.

“She was following procedure. Don’t blame her. She knows how to think for me. If you were half as considerate as her, I wouldn’t be so exhausted.”

He picked up his coat and checked the time.

“Enough. I have a territory negotiation tonight. I don’t have time to comfort you. From now on, anything under 100,000 dollars doesn’t need Vera’s signature. Stay home, recover, and stop causing trouble. I’ll bring you macarons tonight. Be good.”

To him, I could not live without him.

That was why he once left me outside in a storm with a high fever and drove off to pick up Vera because she had twisted her ankle.

Macarons?

I had stopped liking them long ago.

My ruined uterus did not matter to me anymore either.

A week ago, if Kane had taken even one minute from that damn negotiation to answer my call, I might have forgiven him.

I might have lied to myself again.

He was the Godfather. He was busy.

That day, I begged him not to hang up.

I only wanted one last sentence.

But Vera’s soft voice cut in before I could speak.

“Godfather, did Madam misunderstand me? I only reminded her that the amount was too large. Without a prescription, I couldn’t approve it. If she’s truly urgent, I can break the rules, but if the Elders question it later, your reputation will suffer. I was strict because I wanted Madam to learn the rules.”

Kane believed her at once.

He forgot I was still begging on the line.

“Elena, did you hear that? Vera thinks of everything for me. Learn from her. Stop being reckless and childish. Give her the prescription first. Then we’ll discuss the funds.”

It was always like that.

“I have to get back to the negotiation. Go to Vera.”

“Follow Vera’s arrangements.”

“Do whatever Vera tells you.”

In Wood Manor, I had the title of the Godfather’s wife.

I lived worse than a maid.

When I wanted a new dress for a formal dinner, Vera would say, “Madam, that red is too bold. The Godfather won’t like it. And that emerald necklace doesn’t suit you. You can’t wear it.”

Then she would sit on my request until the last second.

I would stand beside Kane in an old dress and fake jewelry while he looked flawless.

He would lean down and hiss in my ear, “Can you stop humiliating me? People will think the Wood family can’t even dress my wife properly. You may not care about shame, but I do. Vera didn’t teach you how to act like a proper Godfather’s wife?”

He never knew what Vera had taken from me.

My clothes.

My dignity.

My only chance to become a mother.

And he was still defending her.
