“So Miss DeLuca’s fiancé was never Lowell DeLuca?”

I heard Lowell suck in a sharp breath.

He reached for me on instinct. Shepard shifted sideways, blocking him.

“Mr. DeLuca. Keep your distance.”

“Impossible. No. You were supposed to marry me.”

On the other side, Lowell’s mother stood frozen. His father’s proud posture collapsed. His voice came out scrambled.

“No. There has to be some kind of misunderstanding here.”

My father had already retrieved the phone from the security chief. He watched the video. Then he dropped it on the floor.

“Forcing my daughter to sign this kind of document. Using a secret recording to publicly humiliate her. You’ve got nerve.”

He turned to face the entire ballroom. His voice was low. Every person heard it.

“Everyone here, listen carefully. From today forward, anyone who continues to do business with Lowell DeLuca’s branch is publicly standing against me.”

The blood drained from Lowell’s parents’ faces entirely.

Shepard took my hand and led me deeper into the ballroom.
