Three Chances for the Amnesiac Don Chapter 06

## Phineas’s POV

Madre Lancaster talked me down. The tension in my spine eased, and I silenced the incoming calls.

I stepped forward and gently drew Seraphina back from the window ledge. “It’s alright. I won’t go to her. Calm down.” I pulled her tightly into my arms to steady her trembling frame.

We had barely steadied ourselves when a second explosion tore apart the distant highway overpass.

All three of us froze rigid, stunned motionless by the sudden detonation.

Leo stumbled staggering into the room, his face drained of colour, caked in blood and dirt.

“Don Wren! It’s bad! Madre Wren’s been in a crash!”

My entire body locked up, my brain unable to absorb his words.

“The brakes failed. We plunged through the guardrail.”

“Madre Wren could have escaped. But she pushed me out of the driver’s seat before the explosion. Her leg was trapped. She couldn’t… couldn’t get out…”

“Your line was dead. By the time I got back, the site went up in a second blast. Fire couldn’t reach her… Don Wren, you need to get to the scene…”

“Are you telling me Cordelia is really dead?” I croaked, voice tight with panic.

I did not wait for Leo to finish speaking; I was already dashing for the door.

I crashed into a hallway guard and reeled backward, catching myself on the holstered pistol at my hip, my mind utterly blank.

A shrill scream from inside the hospital room cut through the corridor noise.

“Mother!”

I turned back. Seraphina was on the floor, clutching her stomach, grabbing at Madre Lancaster’s pant leg.

“Mother, don’t leave me! Save my baby! Mother!”

But Madre Lancaster wasn’t listening. She was muttering to herself, dazed.

“Cordelia crashed… Cordelia is dead…”

“Mother, snap out of it! Help me!” Seraphina screeched, seething with fury at the woman’s numb indifference.

“Are you going to run off after that slut Cordelia as well?!”Get me up right now, you fool! If my baby comes to any harm, I’ll destroy you!”

“What did you call me?” Madre Lancaster snapped back to reality, staring at Seraphina in disbelief.

They shared no blood tie, yet she’d raised Seraphina as her own flesh and blood for years; everyone in their circle knew that truth.

“I told you to get me into the operating room, you deaf old crone!”

“Your own daughter is gone. Your only remaining allies are my father and me.” “Lose this child, and we will ruin you completely.”

Madre Lancaster’s eyes turned red with fury. She looked at Seraphina with pure contempt.

“So you’ve been the venomous serpent all along.”

“I cared for you for decades, and this is the gratitude I receive?”

“Very well. Lie there and perish for all I care.”

She kicked Seraphina’s hand away with vicious force.

Seraphina tumbled to the ground. Madre Lancaster’s heel crushed down on her hand, leaving a bloody gash. Seraphina let out a bloodcurdling scream.

I felt not an ounce of sympathy. She looked no different from any traitor locked away in the Wren family dungeons.

Madre Lancaster ran out of the room. Seeing me, she wept with rage. “What are you still doing here? Go find Cordelia!”

“Cordelia, you can’t be gone…Please… don’t torment me with this cruel trick…”
