I Saw The Comments Predicting My Divorce And Fired The Cause First Chapter 07

The divorce went more quietly than I’d expected.

The day I came home, I opened the front door and thought I’d walked into the wrong house.

The living room wasn’t a living room anymore.

Floral curtains. A green thrift-store couch. A folding card table with two microwaved dinners sitting on it, still steaming.

He’d re-created our college apartment, right here, in the middle of a mansion.

Miles stood in the center of it all, in that old gray hoodie from college, hair uncombed. He looked like a ghost from years ago.

“Hey.” His voice shook a little. “Look. Did I get it right? Does it look the same?”

“It took me forever to find the same exact fabric for the curtains, and the couch, it’s the same model. I tracked one down online.”

“Miles.”

“Wait. Don’t say anything yet. Look at this.”

He grabbed a frame off the table, our old photo from college, blown up and matted. “I had it printed, and I was going to hang it right…”

“Miles.”

He stopped. The frame dangled from his hand.

I was still standing in the doorway. I hadn’t even stepped inside.

“You don’t have to do this.”

“I’m not putting on a show.”

He stepped toward me, reaching for my hand. “Harper, I mean it.”

“You said you missed who I used to be. So I’ll be him again.”

“I can be the guy who only has eyes for you again. I can do that, starting now.”

“Can you?”

He went still.

“You’re a billionaire CEO. You’ve got thousands of people depending on you. You’ve got a board breathing down your neck.”

“You’ve got business dinners, deal negotiations, meetings that never end.”

I met his eyes. “Can you really go back to being that broke kid in the basement who scraped by on one meal a day?”

His mouth opened. Nothing came out.

“You can’t. And neither can I. We don’t get to go back.”

I reached into my bag and pulled out the divorce papers.

“I had Piper revise it. It’s not the entire estate, just what I’m entitled to by law. Standard division. Just sign it.”

Miles stared at the papers. He didn’t move.

When he finally looked up, his eyes were wet.

“Harper, do you still love me?”

I didn’t answer.

The answer didn’t matter anymore.

He picked up the pen and signed.

His hand trembled, but he pressed so hard the pen nearly tore through the page.

He set the pen down and turned away from me.

“Go.” His voice was barely there. “Before I take it back.”

I folded the papers into my bag.

I turned and walked out.

At the door, I stopped.

“Miles.”

“…”

“Don’t actually eat that microwave crap. It’ll just make you sick.”

The second the door clicked shut, I heard something shatter on the other side.

In the elevator, I caught my reflection in the mirror.

I wasn’t crying.

The comments came in softer this time…

[I’m actually sobbing right now. Actually sobbing.]

[He signed it. It’s really over.]

[Her telling him not to eat that microwave crap at the end?? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO ME. I am DESTROYED.]

[Wait hold on, when did the comments flip?? Wasn’t everyone trashing her before??]

[Because we were WRONG. She was never the villain. She’s been the best character this whole time.]

[Where’s the “endgame couple” now?? Where’s Willow?? She literally vanished.]

[The ML transferred her out of the city. Pretty sure she’s done.]

[So the ML lost them both?? Willow AND Harper??]

[Good.]
