They Called Me The Mistress, Until My Mafia Family Arrived Chapter 01

There were two famous good-for-nothings in New York.

One was me, Mia Lancaster, a New York princess who did nothing but eat, drink, and have fun.

The other was my childhood friend Evan, a young heir to a wealthy family who suffered from trauma-induced social withdrawal and congenital heart failure.

But my oldest brother was the heir to a feared mafia Don, and my second oldest brother was a super-rich tycoon who flew under the radar on the wealth rankings.

His eldest sister was an invincible queen of the legal world, and his second sister was a medical genius capable of bringing the dead back to life.

The four cruel and ruthless kings were chatting while playing poker: “If you’re going to support a good-for-nothing, you might as well pair them up—they’re easier to take care of.”

So Evan and I went ahead and got married.

Our daily life after marriage consisted of running up my second brother’s credit card, scrounging meals from my oldest brother, and waiting for the sisters to feed us.

That was until our older brother asked us to attend the dinner hosted by Havenport’s wealthiest man on his behalf.

At the banquet, the princess of the Kensington family insisted, based on a blurry photo of a woman’s back that looked similar, that I was the mistress who had come between her and her lover.

I explained calmly, “You’ve got the wrong person. I’m married—this is my husband.”

Jewel Kensington flew into a rage and raised her hand to hit me.

“You’re married, and you’re still out here hitting on people?”

Evan instinctively stepped in front of me, taking the slap for me, and a trickle of blood ran from the corner of his mouth.

She snorted derisively. “Oh, so you’re a fool too? You can’t even tell your wife’s cheating, and you’re still sticking up for her?”

“One’s shameless, the other’s a fool—they’re a perfect match.”

She waved her hand, and several bodyguards rushed toward us.

“Get them both.”

I looked at Evan, my heart aching, and dialed my oldest brother’s number.

“Big brother, someone’s picking on me.”

After all, they didn’t realize that while you might survive provoking New York’s four ruthless kings, messing with us two good-for-nothings was a death sentence.

“Oh my, can’t win a fight so you’re calling for backup? ‘Big Brother’? I’d say it’s more like ‘Sugar Daddy.'”

Jewel snatched my phone and smashed it hard on the ground.

“What’s the matter? Your idiot of a husband isn’t enough for you, so how many sugar daddies have you been seeing behind his back?”

I stared at the phone on the ground and took a deep breath.

“Miss Kensington, this is the last time I’ll say this.”

“You’ve got the wrong person.”

“Take your people and get out of here now, and I’ll pretend nothing happened.”

Jewel burst out laughing.

She turned to look at the guests watching the spectacle around her.

“Did you hear that? A mistress who depends on a man actually told me to get lost?”

A burst of laughter rippled through the crowd.

“Miss Kensington, mistresses these days are quite bold.”

“Exactly. And she even dragged her dim-witted husband along to cover for her. I’ve seen it all now.”

Jewel took a step forward in her several-inch heels.

She raised her hand, her fingernail almost touching the tip of my nose.

“In Havenport, my word is law.”

“Hit them!”

The bodyguards lunged at me with clenched fists.

I instinctively closed my eyes.

The pain I had anticipated never came.

Evan held me tightly in his arms.

“Don’t… hit Mia.”

He spoke very slowly, and his pronunciation wasn’t very clear.

He suffered from social isolation due to traumatic experiences in his childhood and didn’t understand what was happening.

But all he knew was that he couldn’t let me get hurt, so he held me tight.

The bodyguards’ fists kept pounding his back.

Bang!

Bang!

Every thud felt like a blow to my heart.

“Evan!”

I struggled desperately to break free from his embrace.

“Let go of me! You have a heart condition—you can’t take a beating!”

Evan shook his head stubbornly.

His face turned pale, but he held on to me without letting go for a moment.

“Mia… It doesn’t hurt.”

“No. Mia’s in pain. I’ll take the hit.”

He forced a smile to comfort me.

What an idiot!

He was shaking from the pain himself, yet he was still worried about whether I was in pain!

“Stop! All of you, stop right now!”

He had a heart condition; he simply couldn’t withstand such a beating.

My eyes were bloodshot, and I whipped my head around to glare at Jewel.

“Stop it! If you keep hitting him, he’ll die.”

The servants around us began to whisper among themselves.

“Their clothes looked like luxury designer haute couture, and this girl had a very unique aura—she didn’t seem like a mistress.”

“Shh, are you out of your mind? Miss Kensington is in a terrible mood right now—who would dare cross her?”

The butler of the Kensington family wiped the cold sweat from his brow and whispered a warning.

“Miss, that gentleman doesn’t look well; he seems to be having a heart attack.”

“What if someone actually gets killed…”

Jewel slapped the butler across the face.

“Shut up!”

“He’s just a fool—why act so high and mighty?”

She pointed at Evan with a look of contempt.

“Never mind his life—even if it were ten lives, I could afford to pay for them!”

“Drag that adulterous couple into the main hall!”

“I’m going to show everyone in Havenport what happens when you try to mess with me!”

The bodyguards roughly dragged Evan and me toward the main hall.

Evan clutched my hand tightly; his fingers were ice-cold.

His chest heaved violently, and a fine sheen of cold sweat beaded on his forehead.

I struggled desperately, my high heels scraping noisily against the floor.

“Don’t touch him! He has a heart condition!”

“You’re going to kill him!”

Jewel walked ahead without even looking back.

“Then let him die.”
