The Lost Decade Chapter 15

The Lost Decade Chapter 15

I looked over at it, my expression indifferent.

My mind was a complete blank. That part of my life had never existed.

“I don’t remember. That year, I got my graduate school acceptance letter from Columbia. I’ve been in New

York the whole time.”

Wyatt’s eyes contracted sharply.

But he didn’t give up.

He drove me to the park next to our high school and pointed at the giant oak tree.

“Under here-we buried our time capsule together when we graduated high school. We promised we’d dig it up together on our fiftieth wedding anniversary.”

He dropped to his knees and started frantically clawing at the dirt with his bare hands.

The more he dug, the more ghastly his face grew.

“No… how can it not be here?! It’s impossible!”

He lifted his head and stared at me, his eyes bloodshot.

But everything he spoke of-I knew nothing about.

“Stop digging, Wyatt.”

He stood up. Still, he wouldn’t give up.

He dragged me to the biggest amusement park in town and stood beneath the giant Ferris wheel.

“Up at the very top-the highest point-that’s where I proposed to you.”

“Cora, why don’t you remember any of this!”

He was emotional, gripping my shoulders, his eyes bloodshot, his voice full of pleading.

“I’m begging you. Please remember. I’m not crazy…”

In stark contrast to his breakdown, I just stood there, face blank.

And then, I let out a deep sigh.

“I know you’re not crazy.”

His head snapped up.

I turned and sat down on a bench beneath the Ferris wheel.

“Truth is, everything you lived through really did happen. I just rewrote the ending because of an accident.”

“The me from ten years ago was beaten and bruised beyond recognition by you. So we decided, starting from the day of senior prom, to change everything.”

“The only thing I didn’t count on… was that you’d still hold onto the memories that got erased.”

Wyatt looked at me in a daze. “Was it… the time I forced you to apologize to Hayley?”
