The Body Swap That Made Her a Billionaire—and Me Awake Chapter 03

Two months later.

Thanks to Evelyn’s round-the-clock care, Kayden’s muscle atrophy had completely subsided, and color had slowly returned to his pale face.

Every night, his one working pinky would curl around hers and hold on tight.

Over those two months, Lena kept dropping by every couple of days just to pick fights.

“Wow, you really treasure this washed-up invalid? Wasting all your time slaving over him for zero payoff?”

She kicked over the basin of hot water Evelyn had just prepared. Scalding water splashed all over Evelyn.

Evelyn didn’t dodge. She bore the sharp burning sting of the scalds and quietly cleaned up the mess.

On the bed, Kayden’s fingers clenched the sheets, veins bulging on the back of his hand. He was straining every nerve to contain his fury.

Evelyn brushed her pinky against his to calm him down.

She knew Lena couldn’t wait to complete the swap.

The more desperate Lena grew to goad Kayden into resenting me, the steadier I remained.

Another month passed before the floating comments appeared again: [Poor girl doesn’t know Lena already got a hex from some sketchy warlock.]

[That hex is nasty. Lena can force a body swap anytime she wants.]

[She spent months doing all the grunt work, and tomorrow she’s going to do all the grueling work only for Lena to reap all the rewards.]

Reading the comments, Evelyn turned and looked at the unconscious man on the bed.

She leaned down and whispered, just loud enough for him to hear:

“Kayden… what if I ended up trapped in a stranger’s face someday?”

“Would you still know it’s really me?”

Silence.

One second later.

His pinky trembled, then curled back hard and locked around hers.

Just like the comments had said, Lena showed up at the apartment the next morning.

The second she walked in, she dug her nails deep into Kayden’s healing wound.

Bright gold text flashed across Evelyn’s vision:

[Heads up! The Hatfield patriarch tracked his location. His security team is downstairs!]

[Lena’s about to make her move! She’s going to push Kayden over the edge, then trigger the swap!]

Sure enough, Lena leaned close to Kayden’s ear and whispered with a vicious smile:

“You useless invalid. I’ve waited three whole months for you to kick the bucket—why are you still clinging to life?”

Kayden’s eyes flew open. He stared at her with murderous fury.

But then Lena’s face turned cold. She slammed the hex against her chest.

A brutal tearing sensation ripped through Evelyn’s body. Her vision went black. It felt like her insides were being crushed.

When she opened her eyes again, everything had changed.

She looked down and saw Lena’s expensive designer dress.

The swap had worked.

The apartment door burst open.

A dozen security men flooded inside and secured the room.

An old man with silver hair walked in, leaning on a cane. Every thud of the cane against the floor seemed to chill the small room. This was Arthur Hatfield—the patriarch of the Hatfield empire.

His eyes reddened when he saw Kayden awake in bed.

“Kayden! I’m sorry I’m late!”

Now stuck in Evelyn’s body, Lena dropped to her knees bawling her eyes out.

“Mr. Hatfield, thank God you’re here!”

She pointed at Evelyn, tears streaming down her face.

“My sister Lena has lost her mind! She hated taking care of Mr. Hatfield and refused to feed him. And just now, she dug her nails into his wound, trying to kill him for his money!”

“I’ve been caring for him for three months, getting up early and staying up late. But she’s been torturing him the whole time.”

She rolled up her sleeve to show fresh scratch marks she’d made on herself.

“See these? She did this when I tried to stop her from hurting him!”

The comments exploded:

[Absolutely shameless! She flipped the script and pinned every crime on the other girl!]

[We’re screwed! She’s trapped in Lena’s body with zero way to prove her innocence.]

[The patriarch is fiercely protective of his grandson. She’s about to get crushed.]

Arthur’s cold, ruthless gaze locked onto Evelyn.

“How dare you harm anyone from the Hatfield clan!”

Two security men grabbed Evelyn’s shoulders and kicked the backs of her knees.

She slammed down onto the hard floor. Pain shot through her knees.

Evelyn didn’t struggle or try to argue.

She knew explanations meant nothing against that much power.

She lifted her head and looked past Arthur, straight at Kayden on the bed.

Off to the side, Lena smiled to herself, already counting the fortune as if it were hers.

Arthur walked to the bedside, his face full of sorrow.

“Kayden, you’ve been through so much.”

He pointed at the two women on the floor. His voice was cold and final.

“Point out your savior and your tormentor. I’ll see the wrongdoer gets a fate worse than death.”

The room went dead silent.

Lena stared at Kayden, full of hope. Evelyn watched him too.

Leaning back against the headboard, Kayden’s pale lips curled into a cold, sharp smile.

Slowly, he raised the same hand that had held Evelyn’s for three months and pointed—
