The Child I Carry Is Not Your Heir Chapter 08

The surrounding guests had gotten their fill of gossip. Worried another ugly fight would break out, someone

cranked up loud upbeat party music.

“Come on now, we’re all old friends. Let bygones be bygones. Jay’s got his lady by his side, and Grace’s

expecting with her partner Sam. Everyone’s doing fine.”

Life really was better without Jay in it.

I couldn’t say the same for him without me around.

I nodded and tugged Sam toward the exit. He’d just flown back from overseas, and we needed private time

alone.

Before stepping out, Sam shot Jay a sharp warning. “All the proof’s laid out plain for you now. If you ever harass Grace again, don’t expect me to go easy on you.”

Sam and I left without hesitation.

The old me would’ve kept glancing back, begging silently for just one single line asking me to stay.

A handful of gentle words would’ve made me abandon everything to rush back into his arms.

But I had my baby growing inside me and a husband who loved me more than anything.

They were my entire world now, and I wanted nothing else.

I brought Sam back to my family home.

He’d insisted on stopping first to formally meet my parents.

He’d picked out stacks of high-end gourmet baskets and specialty treats before arriving at our front door.

Even so, he fretted constantly over missing something important or falling short with his preparations.

Dressed in a crisp formal suit, he grew so nervous waiting by the door he made me double-check his tie

repeatedly for flaws.

I stifled my laughter and nodded over and over.

“You look perfect. Tall, handsome, totally flawless.”

The six-foot-one man froze up entirely the second he met my mom’s gaze, unable to string together a full

sentence.

He finally gathered all his courage to speak “Please let me marry Grace I’ll spend every single day taking good care of her for the rest of our lives”

His earnest stiff manner made my mom burst into amused laughter.

“Wow, you’re nothing like what I pictured. I half-expected you rocking a tailored black suit with a sidearm and a squad of bodyguards trailing behind you.”

After dinner, she officially accepted Sam as her future son-in-law.

Once Sam left for the night, Mom pulled me aside to whisper privately.

“He’s the head of a mafia family after all. Are you absolutely sure about committing to him?”

Mom kept up with every local rumor and knew all about the regional criminal underworld operations.

She patted my shoulder gently. “It works out well either way. He’s loaded, far better off than Jay. That boy

never valued you, so finding someone wealthier will knock him down a peg.”

“I’d always assumed things would work out with Jay, having grown up side by side with him our whole lives

with our families knowing each other well.”

“Looking back though, their family was never a good match. They’ve always looked down their noses at us,

even mocked our family when we struggled through hardships at the hospital.”

“Now your wedding’s locked in, and their big engagement’s gone up in smoke.”

I perked up immediately. “What exactly happened?”

I hadn’t heard a single word from Jay since our messy class reunion falling-out.

Mom curled her lip and shook her head. “They were all set to lock down their wedding date, but Jay

randomly kept pushing the ceremony back again and again. His fiancée’s family took the disrespect

personally and called the whole engagement off outright.”

My lashes lowered, unfazed by the news.

Yvonne had been raised spoiled and adored by everyone around her.

Jay had poured endless effort into winning her over when she came back to town.

He’d humiliated her harshly right after securing her commitment, and it was never in her nature to swallow such humiliation quietly.

Sam wandered over curiously and asked what we’d been chatting about.

I shook my head with a smile and lied we’d been sorting out wedding details.

His face lit up instantly. “That’s fantastic news! I was starting to fear you’d never agree to marry me.”

He’d popped the question multiple times already.

I’d hesitated before, convinced we came from completely different worlds.

I’d tied our fates to this baby-once our child was born, an unbreakable bond would forever link Sam and me

together.
