The Child I Carry Is Not Your Heir Chapter 04

A sudden jolt from the brakes snapped me out of my thoughts, and the car rolled to a stop inside the garage.

I hesitated briefly before resolving to tell him the full truth from that night.

“Jay, what happened between us that night was really…”

Nothing had happened at all.

My unfinished words died in my throat. He threw open the car door in a rush and stalked off without a single backward glance.

“Yvonne, don’t be scared. I’ll head over to you soon, just wait for me.”

He left in such a frantic hurry that he completely forgot I was still trapped inside the vehicle, hitting the remote to lock all the car doors on his way out.

I was left alone, pounding desperately against the windows and calling for help.

It hit me belatedly who Yvonne was.

The only senior who’d ever turned down his advances.

I waited hour after hour well into the early morning, finally accepting he was never coming back.

Why would his long-coveted ideal girl let her mood sour over someone like me?

The air inside the car grew thin and stifling, and the winter snow left the space bitterly cold. Worst of all, my phone had died completely.

When I next blinked awake, pale white walls and sharp antiseptic fumes filled my senses.

Raised voices blared beside my bed as Mrs Miller tore into Jay furiously.

“How could you be so heartless? You knew full well Grace was pregnant yet abandoned her locked in your car all night! If anything happens to that baby growing inside her, you’ve no right to go on living!”

“I only found her collapsed in your vehicle by pure chance when I walked past the garage…”

My mother had always adored Jay, but her face stayed stony cold this time, refusing to utter a single word in his defense.

She hurried to my bedside the second my eyes fluttered open, raw worry shining in her gaze.

“Grace, how are you feeling? Doctors said your body’s worn thin, and we barely managed to keep the baby safe. Don’t ever put yourself in unnecessary danger again, you hear?”

Every line of her speech made it plain she thought Jay was nothing but a dangerous hazard.

Mrs Miller looked thoroughly embarrassed yet forced a strained smile. “You’re right, Grace, your health needs careful tending. I’ll keep this reckless boy under tight control from now on so he stops troubling you.”

“That’s between her and me, none of your business.” Jay stepped forward awkwardly after speaking, lifting a warm bowl of bone broth to my lips in an obvious peace offering.

I leaned away to keep my distance and refused to open my mouth for a single sip.

Frustration flared in him, and he slammed the bowl down hard. “If you refuse to eat, don’t come crying to me when something goes wrong with the baby!”

His words pulled a faint laugh out of me. He’d spent days insisting the child wasn’t his, so why was he suddenly so wrapped up in worry?

Displeasure flickered across Mrs Miller’s face; she’d clearly already assumed Jay fathered my baby. “Grace, your child’s wellbeing comes first. Don’t punish the little one just to spite Jay.”

I replied evenly, “I’m not throwing a tantrum, Mrs Miller. My baby already has a father, so Jay’s concern is entirely unnecessary.”

Jay’s complexion darkened sharply. “You’re still in your first trimester, so I won’t pick fights with you right now. I’ve stocked up everything you’ll need to care for yourself.”

I glanced toward the bedside, which was piled high with every kind of infant supply imaginable.

No matter how many times I’d corrected him, Jay clung stubbornly to his wrong assumption.

Now was the perfect moment to set everything straight with everyone present and spare another jealous outburst from him fighting to claim a place in my life.

Just then, Mom picked up my phone; she’d thoughtfully plugged it in to charge earlier.

Her shocked voice cut through the room. “Grace, someone’s called you ninety-nine times? And this contact nickname… it’s so overly sappy and cheesy…”
