Reborn Three Times: His Murdered Wives Uncovered His Obsession Chapter 09 The Darkness Finally Lifted

When Charles saw the eunuch standing behind Chancellor Wallace, the color drained from his face.

The eunuch walked up and said coldly, “Lord Barnes, after hearing what Chancellor Wallace said, His Majesty didn’t quite believe him at first.

“So he sent me along to see for myself.

“I heard every word you just said and saw everything you did.

“If the Chancellor isn’t enough as a witness, I can always testify too.”

This eunuch was the Emperor’s head steward. He’d served His Majesty for nearly fifty years. No one in the court had more of the Emperor’s trust.

Charles had nothing left to say.

He was so desperate he grabbed my wrist and said frantically, “Heather, think about all the years we’ve known each other. Help me out here.

“Just tell the steward you were willing just now. Please.”

I yanked my hand away and looked at him like he was an idiot.

“Charles, I’m not crazy.

“Why would I throw away my own innocence to save your sorry ass?”

And just like that, the three Barnes family members were taken away by the guards.

Marrying Lilith was shameful, sure, but it wasn’t a crime.

But imprisoning me, trying to bribe a high official into lying about an innocent woman, and Charles’s attempted rape? That was more than enough to sink them.

Sure enough, with Chancellor Wallace and his wife plus the Emperor’s head steward all testifying against them, the Barnes family’s sentence came down fast.

Charles was sent to the northern border to do hard labor for eight years.

Donovan and Kelsey got five years in prison for failing to raise their son right and helping him

commit crimes.

Their noble title was stripped, and all their property was confiscated.

The once-great Barnes House was sealed up overnight.

On the day Charles was exiled, Jasmine and I went to watch the show.

When Charles shuffled past us, unkempt, he lifted his head.

Those eyes, once fake and calculating through three lifetimes, were empty now.

All that remained was resentment and hatred.

He opened his dry, cracked lips and asked just one thing. “Why did you ruin me?”

Jasmine didn’t even want to look at him. She turned her head away.

I wanted him to understand before he died, so I answered calmly. “Because if we didn’t ruin you, you would’ve ruined us.”

He looked like he wanted to ask something else, but a guard kicked him and didn’t give him the chance.

Just as we were about to leave, Jasmine nudged me. “Heather, look.”

Crouched in a corner of the street, shivering, was Lilith.

Technically, since her husband’s family had fallen, her own family-the Shaw family-should have taken her in.

But that erotic painting of Lilith and Charles had somehow leaked out into the streets.

The Shaw family found a valid reason to cut ties with Lilith.

She tried to go back to her old job at the brothel.

But her reputation was so trashed that even the brothel didn’t want her.

Lilith was an outcast now.

She hid her face and begged during the day. At night, she huddled with the other beggars in a rundown shelter to stay out of the wind and rain.

I didn’t feel sorry for her at all.

Back then, Dad had bought her freedom and treated her well.

But after we looked into it, we found out she’d betrayed him not long after coming into the house. She’d started sneaking around with Charles, who was five years younger than her.

The way things turned out for Lilith? That was just her karma.

“Come on. Nothing left to see here.”

I took Jasmine’s hand and turned to leave.

The darkness that had been weighing on my heart for two lifetimes finally lifted completely at this moment.

A month later, the Wallace family welcomed Jasmine and me into their home.

We were both a little nervous, since we didn’t really know the men we were marrying.

But the two Wallace brothers each said one line. “It’s okay if you don’t know us yet.” “We can

wait.”

Ethan Wallace, the older twin, took my hand gently. “Heather, I’ve been waiting ever since I first saw you. You were eight years old.”

Francis Wallace, the younger twin, followed his brother’s lead, his face turning red. “Jasmine, I was there that day when Ethan saw Heather.

“But I liked you better when you were six.”

Jasmine raised an eyebrow at me smugly. “Heather, I win this time. Someone liked me when 1 was six, while you had to wait till you were eight.”

I rolled my eyes. “Do you really have to compete over this, too?”

Jasmine was back to her old sassy self. “Of course I do. Why wouldn’t I?”
