The Comments Said My Baby Was Worth A Billion-Dollar Empire Chapter 10

A fleet of black cars lined the street below. The rest of the Vance clan had arrived.

Victor’s uncle stood at the front, one hand on the car door, his face dark as a storm. “Victor. Bring her to the estate.”

Victor kept walking, arms locked around me. His uncle’s bodyguards closed off the exit.

“That child has Vance blood. You don’t get to let the Sterlings take the child, and you don’t get to hide him either.”

I laughed, the sharp, brittle kind.

“Has anyone in this entire mess stopped to ask what I want?”

Victor looked down at me. “Where do you want to go?”

I sniffled. “Home. And then the courthouse.”

The faintest pull at the corner of his mouth. “Okay.”

His uncle’s voice cut in behind us. “You’re not leaving.”

Rain came down in sheets.

Victor set me inside the car and planted himself in front of the door. A wall of his uncle’s bodyguards closed in around him.

A baton struck him across the shoulder. His face went white for a split second.

I screamed, slamming my palm against the glass. “Victor!”

He looked back at me. “Stay in the car.”

His uncle called out through the rain. “You’d throw away the entire Vance inheritance for her?”

Victor wiped the blood from his mouth. “Inheritance?” A cold smile. “You think I still want it?”

Sirens wailed in the distance. Victor’s people were closing in.

Everything spun out of control at once. In the chaos, a car smashed through the barricade and tore straight toward me.

I couldn’t move. The headlights swelled in the window.

Victor ripped the door open, dragged me out, and wrapped his body around mine as we tumbled down the steps.

Pain exploded everywhere.

He’d taken the fall with his back. The stone steps had torn through his shirt, and blood spread fast across the fabric.

I couldn’t feel my hands.

“Victor. Don’t do this to me.”

He opened his eyes. The first place he looked was my stomach.

“Does it hurt?”

I shook my head, sobbing. “You’re bleeding.”

He reached up and touched my face, his voice barely above a whisper.

“Chloe. We still haven’t made it to the courthouse.”

“Don’t marry anyone else.”

I broke. “Shut up. Shut up, you’re not dying.”

The ambulance arrived. They rushed him into surgery.

I sat in the hallway with his blood still drying on my hands. Mom came running. The color drained from her face when she saw me.

She reached for me. I pulled away.

“If he dies, I will never forgive you.”

Mom crumbled.

The surgery light burned for what felt like an eternity. When the doctor finally walked out, my legs almost gave out.

“Mr. Vance is stable.”

The air rushed back into my lungs. The doctor looked at me again.

“Miss Sterling, the trauma has put you at extreme risk of losing the baby. We need to admit you right now.”

Victor still hadn’t opened his eyes when they wheeled me away.

I woke in the dark to a voice outside my door.

Lily. “That baby was never supposed to exist.”
