After waiting for an entire month, it was finally the day to start my volunteer work at the pet shelter.

I personally unpacked every apple pie, placed them in the food bowl of the pregnant female dogs, and buried them beneath their kibble.

Then, I walked over to a nearby highway overpass to distribute the remaining apple pies to the local

strays.

Once the prep work was done, I waited for the arrival of Jenville’s wealthy heiress and her pregnant greyhound. Word was that she doted on the greyhound a lot and treated it like it was the apple of her eye.

Just then, Clara walked over, beaming as she introduced us. “Jessie, this is the good friend I was telling

you about, Ms. Lloyd. Her dad is the wealthiest man in Jenvillle.”

In truth, I knew who the woman, Natalie Lloyd, was. There was no need for an introduction.

While I nodded at Natalie, Clara affectionately linked arms with her.

“Natalie, this is Jessie Carter. She’s my best friend, a truly beautiful and kind-hearted soul. Even though

she comes from an ordinary family, and her husband isn’t really wealthy, the two of them work incredibly hard.

“His startup just launched and could really use help from someone in your circle. I was thinking of inviting Jessie and her husband to your upcoming birthday party. That way, they can network with

people in their industry.

“What do you say?”

I immediately understood what she was doing.

In my past life, she had set up the same scenario and invited me to Natalie’s birthday party.

At first, I genuinely believed that it would boost Wyatt’s business, so I was thrilled. When I heard that the

guest list included high-society individuals, I was deeply moved and convinced that Clara genuinely

cared about me.

But after stepping foot into the birthday party, I noticed that something was off.

As soon as Wyatt entered the ballroom, a group of men dragged him away for drinks until he was completely wasted.

I was never much of a drinker myself. After just a glass of red wine, I collapsed, drunk, and had no idea that my drink was spiked.

They dragged me into a room, where an HIV-positive man assaulted me.

When I woke up, I was met with Wyatt’s and Martha’s vicious condemnation. They called me a

shameless cheat and a whore who had contracted a sexually transmitted disease.

Back then, I couldn’t understand who would want to ruin my life. I had even considered turning to Clara for help to investigate the truth.

Now, as I looked at her calculating, treacherous face, it dawned on me that this was a trap she had

orchestrated.

I couldn’t help but let out a cold laugh.

Masking the contempt in her eyes, Natalie was exceptionally warm to me. “Any friend of Clara’s is a friend of mine. Come to my birthday party, and I’ll make sure both of you have a great time.”

Clara wrapped her arms around me and laughed. “Thanks, Ms. Lloyd! See? I told you she’s kind and down-

to-earth. You believe me now, right?

“Just make sure you don’t forget about me when you two strike it rich.”

My stomach churned violently as I fought back the urge to throw up. I brushed them off with a few dismissive replies and walked away.

Finally, it was dinner time for the dogs.

The director hosted the guests and explained how to care for the adorable dogs properly. Wealthy socialites with luxury dog breeds sat in the lecture hall, listening intently and occasionally clapping.

The dogs were lined up and devouring their meals. None of them had dug down to the apple pies beneath their kibble yet, so right now, no one could have predicted what was about to unfold.

I looked at the elegant greyhound. Its abdomen was round and tight, a clear sign that it was full-term and ready to give birth.

It lowered its head and gracefully licked the apple pie lining the bottom of the bowl, looking utterly

satisfied.

Just then, a chorus of ecstatic cheers erupted from the far side of the crowd.

I looked over to see Clara holding up a pregnancy test, her other hand gripping Colter’s arm tightly as she

excitedly flaunted her results to the friends around her.

“It’s positive! We’re finally having a baby!”

Her voice trembled slightly with pure excitement, while her expression was a mix of uncontainable joy and triumph.
