She Carried His Child, So I Fled with His Twins Chapter 07

[Stella’s POV)

The plane pierced the clouds, leaving the city that belonged to the Lupos, with all its neon and bloodshed,

far behind.

I leaned quietly against the cold cabin wall, watching the glittering lights of the family territories shrank to pinpricks below.

My heart was calmer than it had ever been.

From this moment on, I was no longer the “Underboss’s wife.”

I didn’t belong to any man, or any family.

I was just myself.

After a long, clandestine journey of secret flights and bumpy off-road drives, I finally arrived at the war-

tom borderlands.

There was no underground order here, only rampant rebels, mercenaries, and smugglers. A firefight could

break out on any street corner at any moment.

Unlike the marble-floored, gold-plated private clubs of the metropolis, the air here always smelled of

gunpowder, gasoline, and rust.

The head of the Doctors Without Borders camp greeted me.

He handed me a heavy bulletproof vest that weighed down my shoulders.

“In this hellhole, staying alive is the top priority. A stray bullet doesn’t care how well you know human

anatomy on an operating table.”

His words struck a chord deep inside me.

I suddenly remembered the first two years of my marriage to Luca.

I had once made that man my entire world. I had once valued him more than my own life.

But that young Underboss, whose eyes were once only for me, was long dead, lost in a whirlpool of power,

women, and so-called “blood debts.”

For the rest of my life, I would never again be a canary in a gilded cage.

I stroked my swollen belly, feeling the stubborn fluttering of the two small lives inside.

From now on, I would live only for myself, and for my two children.

I quickly threw myself into the high-intensity work of a battlefield surgeon.

Two nearby armed factions had just clashed, and a steady stream of wounded was being brought into the

camp.

I pushed through my pregnancy discomfort, standing at a crude operating table with a flickering overhead light.

Relying on the skills I had honed for five years in the Lupo family’s underground operating rooms, I pulled them back from death’s door, one by one.

In this wasteland of death and despair, I found a long-lost sense of freedom and peace.

The long months flew by in a blur of gunfire.

My belly was now very large, and even bending down to tie my shoes was becoming difficult.

Just when I thought I had severed all ties with my past, it came creeping back.

One evening, a medic, wiping soot from his face, burst into the sterile area.

“Dr. Stella, there’s a man at the wire fence outside the camp, asking for you by name.”

“He’s in the tatters of a bespoke suit, looks like some high ranking boss who barely survived a massacre.

A real mess.”

The words “high-ranking boss” instinctively made me tense for a moment, but I quickly suppressed the

feeling.

I pushed aside the bloodstained curtain and saw Luca, clinging to the barbed-wire fence.

In just a few months, he looked as if he had aged ten years.

The Underboss whose eyes were once sharp as a razor at the five family meetings now had a jaw covered in rough stubble. His eyes were sunken and bloodshot, his whole being exuding an air of hollowed out despair.

When he saw me emerge from the tent, my belly large and round, the tears came.

Ignoring the rifles of the camp guards, he threw himself against the fence.

“Stella! It’s really you! I finally found you!”

He reached out his wounded hands through the wire, trying to touch me. I took a cold step back, avoiding him.

“Mr. Lupo. Show some dignity. Our divorce is final.”

My voice was steady, without a hint of emotion.

Luca’s fingers curled stiffly in the cold air.

He suddenly broke down, sobbing like a child.

“Stella, don’t look at me like that. I’ve been going crazy looking for you. I used all the family’s connections, searched every corner of Europe, every place you could possibly be.”

“Did you know? After you left, everything fell apart. The baby… his heart failed.”

I paused for a fraction of a second.

With a severe congenital defect like that, without immediate intervention, the outcome was inevitable.

Luca squatted down in agony, his hands clutching his head, his voice hoarse and inhuman.

“I’m sorry, Stella… We were all wrong. I shouldn’t have doubted you, shouldn’t have let you suffer like that.

“You were right about his heart! That night, the baby suffered permanent damage because we believed Bianca and drove your specialist away…”

“It’s all my fault! I was the one who pushed you away, I ruined my own son’s life!”

“I’m a bastard. I deserve this.”

Looking at this man, once a powerful mafia boss who held life and death in his hands, now groveling at my feet like a stray dog with a broken spine, I felt nothing.

In this place, I had seen too much real life and death.

His belated repentance was too light, too cheap.

Luca suddenly looked up, his eyes filled with a desperate, last-ditch hope.

“Stella, come back with me, please? It’s too dangerous here! You’re about to give birth, a stray bullet here could kill you!”

“I know I was wrong. We can start over, okay?”

I looked down at him as if he were a complete stranger and gently shook my head.

“No. I’m never going back.”
