They Died And Came Back To Destroy Me Again Chapter 06

“Caleb!”

Vanessa hurried after him, calling his name.

“Why do you have to find her? Are you changing your mind? Do you like her again?”

Caleb’s jaw was tight, and he didn’t slow down.

He couldn’t hear anything, he just wanted to find me and didn’t bother to answer her.

Vanessa ran in front of him, blocking his way. Her eyes were red, her face pitiful.

“Are you abandoning me, Caleb?”

“You promised! You promised you’d stay with me! Did you forget?”

Her desperation only annoyed him more.

He turned sharply and stared at her, his eyes cold.

“Then tell me, was it really you who saved me back then when I was ambushed?”

Vanessa’s face went rigid.

Panic flashed in her eyes, and her voice stammered. “Why… why are you bringing that up? It was so long ago…”

“Vanessa, are you still trying to lie to me?”

Caleb looked at her, his last bit of hope gone and his voice filled with disappointment.

He didn’t say another word, he just pushed past her and walked away.

No matter how much she cried and shouted, he didn’t look back.

In the days that followed, Caleb searched for me like a madman.

He contacted all my friends and classmates, but no one would tell him anything.

He even tried to file a missing person report. But he had no direct family relation, no proof I was in danger.

They wouldn’t take the case.

He tried everything, but nothing worked.

Caleb sat slumped in his desk chair, crushed by regret and helplessness.

Then came the last day to submit college applications.

He stared at the blank form on his computer screen.

Suddenly, a flood of memories from the past came back to him.

I had held my application form, my eyes bright with dreams.

I was so happy, telling him we would go to the same school and stay together forever.

But back then, he only had eyes for Vanessa. He carefully planned to change my application, to make me disappear from their world.

He never thought I would jump from the twenty-eighth floor.

He filled out the application for the school we had promised to go to together.

Ashfield University.

He still held onto a sliver of hope. Even if I went to the rival school, Sterling University, we would still be in the same state.

He could find me and fix things.

Holding onto that tiny hope, Caleb waited. But graduation day came, and I didn’t show.

Our names hung on the school’s honor wall, front and center.

State Champion Emma Hartwell. State Rank 5 Caleb Thornton.

We were the school’s greatest pride.

The news about the state champion was everywhere.

Caleb, as a top scorer, was swarmed by reporters and didn’t get free until late.

He rushed to find Mr. Donovan, grasping for his last chance.

“Mr. Donovan, where is Emma? Which school did she apply to?”

Mr. Donovan looked at him, confused. “Emma didn’t tell you?”

“She gave up on domestic schools months ago, she’s going to a top international university. She left the day after the SSEE ended.”

The words hit Caleb like a ton of bricks.
