Since It’s Already Like This Chapter 17

A ten-year friendship deserved a proper goodbye.

When she saw me, Mira looked uneasy, her smile strained.

“Indy, thank you for being willing to see me.”

She had lost a lot of weight, and her complexion was sallow.

I looked at her, my heart a mess of conflicting emotions, but I managed to say softly, “I heard you’re going back to your hometown. I wish you all the best.”

Mira froze, and her eyes quickly reddened.

“I’m sorry, Indy.”

She did owe me an apology.

But hearing the words out loud didn’t bring the relief I thought it would.

“Indy, I just… I lost my head.”

She wiped her eyes with a tissue, her voice hoarse.

“I knew he treated me differently. I knew the way he looked at me was different.”

“But when he was good to me in front of you, I felt happy. I even felt like I had finally beaten you at something.”

She looked at me, her eyes bloodshot.

“Ever since we were little, I was never as good as you.”

“I wasn’t as smart as you, or as brave, or as independent.”

“My GPA wasn’t as high as yours. My job wasn’t as good as yours. My salary wasn’t as high. It felt like this was the one thing where I came out ahead. But I really didn’t want to hurt you.”

She lowered her head, covering her face as she sobbed.

“I kept hoping for the best, and that’s how we ended up here.”

I looked at her, my own emotions surprisingly steady.

In all of this, Lowell was in the wrong.

But Mira wasn’t innocent, either.

From the first time Lowell sided with her and ignored me, he had made his choice.

And Mira chose silence, enjoying his favoritism.

She had made her choice, too.
