They Erased Me, So I Rewrote My Life Chapter 35

Leo didn’t answer right away.

He turned to look at me.

Firelight flickered in his eyes, but I saw something very strange in his expression.

Not suspicion.

Not simple curiosity.

It looked more like grief.

“Eliza,” he said suddenly, his voice a little hoarse, “if one day you found out I had hidden something huge from you, would you forgive me?”

I looked up at him. “What kind of thing?”

“Just a hypothetical.” He avoided my eyes, looking back at the fire. “Suppose I had done something to protect you that you might not be able to accept.”

“That would depend on what it was,” I said, trying to keep my tone light.

But he didn’t smile.

The air suddenly grew heavy, the only sound the crackle of burning wood.

“Leo?” I took his hand and found his palm was cold. “What are you trying to say?”

He looked at me.

His gaze was impossibly complicated.

Struggle, pain, and an emotion I couldn’t name.

In the end, he shook his head.

“Nothing.”

He pulled me into his arms and held me tightly, so tightly I could barely breathe.

“Just stay by my side,” he whispered.

“I will.”

I buried my face in his chest and listened to his heartbeat.

“I won’t let anyone hurt you again,” he said.

His voice was soft, but it sounded like an oath.
