They Erased Me, So I Rewrote My Life Chapter 12

“Visitor parking is on the other side, man.”

“Eliza’s busy. If you have something to say, you can say it to me.”

After a few of these encounters, Bryce gave up.

I answered none of the Walton family’s calls.

Every number was blocked. Every letter they sent went to my lawyer first, who only forwarded the parts with actual legal standing.

My principle was simple.

Law, not feelings.

On Friday afternoon, Leo called out to me in the parking lot.

“This weekend,” he said, leaning against his old pickup and scratching the back of his head, “my uncle’s farm needs some fence repairs. Want to come? Think of it as… an extension of our agreement.”

I looked at him, not quite understanding what fixing a fence had to do with our agreement.

He cleared his throat, his gaze drifting away.

“My uncle wants to meet you. He said he wants to see what the girl I’m bringing home for the first time looks like.”

He said “bringing home” very quickly, and the tips of his ears turned red.

I thought about it and agreed.

The Hernandez family farm was nothing like the backdrops of the fundraising dinners I used to attend.

There were no manicured lawns here, and no one in riding clothes serving wine.

There was only sun-warmed earth, metal barns, and the heavy scent of hay in the air.
