After I Walked Away and Found My Real Home, They Finally Regretted It Chapter 02

Disappointment flashed through Julian’s eyes, followed by a cold, mocking smile.

“You didn’t hurt Amelia?”

“Then why are you here at the hospital?”

“Don’t tell me you came in the middle of the night just to sightsee.”

“I came here to die,” I said quietly.

The suicide method I had chosen through the system was to stop a hospital-wide violent attack.

Tonight, a mass stabbing would occur here.

An armed man would slash seven doctors before jumping from the building to his death.

Among the victims was a female physician specializing in women’s diseases and cancer.

Before her death, she had proposed reforms to gynecological instruments and pioneered a medical-grade sanitary pad. Her work drastically reduced the risk of inflammatory disease in women.

In my original world, my mother wouldn’t survive long after being diagnosed with uterine cancer.

That was why the system had chosen me.

My task was complete. In my final moments, I wanted to do whatever I could to help the women in this world.

I just hadn’t expected it to be Julian’s hospital.

“Die?” Julian scoffed.

“Vivian Sinclair, did you switch tactics and decide to play the pity card with suicide?”

“Who taught you that?”

“That friend of yours who jumped off a building?”

“She was a lunatic,” he sneered. “A worthless piece of trash, just like you.”

A familiar voice cut in from behind.

My third brother strode over, holding up the news article about Clara’s death, sneering loudly.

“Fishmonger’s daughter kills herself out of shame after realizing she can’t compare to her rich husband’s first love?”

“Vivian, look at these headlines. Which one isn’t true?”

“You and Clara are the same. Cheap. Lowborn.”

“You were raised in our family for eighteen years after being switched at birth, and you don’t hold a candle to Amelia.”

After finishing, Leo Sinclair grabbed my hair and yanked my head back.

“Vivian, come apologize to Amelia.”

“Do that, and I’ll forgive you this time.”

“Otherwise,” he continued coldly, “I’ll expose your real background. No university in the country will dare accept you.”

“Fine,” I replied.

“What did you say?” Leo froze. His grip tightened unconsciously as disbelief crossed his face.

“I said you won’t be able to attend college,” he repeated. “Do you even understand what that means?”

Of course I understood.

Three months before I was supposed to start applying to colleges, my mother was diagnosed with cancer.

My father and my brother lied to me, saying she had gone traveling.

How could I not know?

My mother loved me. She loved this family.

She was our emotional anchor, the one holding everyone together.

She used to say all the time, “This family would fall apart without me.”

I would always smile and answer, “Then you have to stay with us, Mom. We can’t do this without you.”

I still remembered the day I secretly followed my father and brother to the hospital.

I saw my mother after chemotherapy, thin as a skeleton.

Her face was ashen, yet she clutched my father’s hand and kept asking the same questions.

“Vivian didn’t find out, right?”

“How is Vivian doing at school?”

“I can’t hold her back. Our Vivian is going to be a scientist someday.”

That day, I ran out of the hospital and cried by the river for three hours.

Then I made a decision.

I would drop out of school and stay with my mother through everything.

I didn’t want to miss a single moment with her.

So when he threatened me with losing college, I understood better than anyone what that meant.

“Vivian, are you insane?!”

“Aren’t you obsessed with Northbridge University’s School of Physics?”
