On Children’s Day, My Future Daughter Called—He Got Exposed Chapter 03

Something in my mind snapped.

“What did you say?”

Annie scratched her head, as if she did not understand why I was asking.

“Ma’am, every time I saw you before, you were acting all crazy. It was really scary.”

“You grabbed Daddy and said you were going to kill him. You said he had to pay with his life for what happened to your dad.”

“Mommy also told me to stay away from you because she was afraid you would hurt me.”

A chill spread through my entire body, and I bit down hard on my lower lip.

What exactly had Gavin done in those years that would make me demand he pay for my father’s death with his life?

I coaxed her gently, “Annie, that was just a game between me and your dad.”

I forced down the pain in my chest, desperate to learn what had happened.

Then Gavin’s voice suddenly came from behind me. I had no idea when he had come back.

“Wendy, who are you talking to?”

I could not let Gavin and Annie end up on the same call, so I quickly ended it.

I did not answer him. Gavin assumed I was still angry.

He set a jar of orange blossom honey beside me.

“I went all the way to Savannah to get this for you. Don’t be mad anymore.”

“I heard it’s good for your skin.”

I looked at the jar of honey, but all I felt was bitterness.

At the hospital today, Hailey had been holding ten jars of orange blossom honey, both surprised and delighted.

“Gavin, I only mentioned it in passing. You actually flew to Savannah just to buy it for me?”

I had seen everything from outside the door.

The jar he gave me was pitifully small, almost like a sample size.

Gavin and I had been together for four years.

He remembered one casual comment from Hailey, but he could not remember that I was allergic to honey.

My eyes stung. I lifted the jar of orange blossom honey and tossed it into the trash.

“Gavin, let’s break up.”

Gavin’s hand froze as he was taking off his coat, and irritation crept back into his expression.

“Wendy Winters, can you stop being so unreasonable?”

“I already have enough to deal with at work. I don’t have time to spend every day guessing what you’re angry about this time.”

“Can’t you learn from Hailey and be a little more easygoing?”

When people are angry, they often reveal what they truly think without meaning to.

Even he froze after saying it. He clicked his tongue instinctively and sighed.

That was the first time I had ever heard him praise Hailey. Before this, the two of them had always been at each other’s throats.

Because of that, I had never suspected a single one of those details.

Once Gavin calmed down, he crouched in front of me and stroked my head as if to soothe me.

“Come on, Wendy. Stop making a scene. I’ll admit I was wrong, okay? I’m sorry.”

“After Grant Ventures secures the project next week, I’ll take you somewhere to relax.”

He was not sorry because he knew he was wrong.

He was afraid the project he almost had in his hands would slip away.

I moved into the guest bedroom, packed all my things, and prepared to report to the Vancouver branch the next week.

That night, the stomach pain came back again.

Out of habit, I forced myself to endure it. I was in too much pain to bother with shoes, so I went to the living room, poured myself some water, and swallowed the painkillers.

The stomach pain had been a chronic problem. Back when Gavin had just started his company, he was constantly out drinking with clients.

Every night, he came home blackout drunk.

I felt sorry for him, so I went with him to those dinners and drank in his place.

After doing that long enough, I ended up with chronic stomach problems.

One night, the pain was so bad that I did not even have the strength to sit up.

I asked Gavin to get up and bring me my medicine, but he did not even open his eyes.

“Just tough it out. I have work tomorrow, and I need to sleep.”

Cold sweat soaked my whole body, and I forced myself through the entire night.

By the time I was taken to the ER the next day, I had already passed out from the pain.

A faint light was on in the living room. I glanced toward the entryway and saw Gavin’s slippers tossed messily by the door.

It looked as if he had left in a hurry.

When I returned to my room, I could not sleep anymore.

I opened Instagram and saw Hailey’s Story.

[I got hungry in the middle of the night, and thank goodness a kind soul came through with food. I’m in heaven.]

In the photo, the table was covered with food from restaurants all over town.

I buried my face against my knees and gave a bitter laugh.

Someone who cares doesn’t need to be taught. Someone who doesn’t care can’t be taught.
