The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 18

The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 18

Julian stood there, watching it happen, his nails digging into his palms.

It felt as if someone had seized his heart and was twisting it inch by inch.

Clara walked past him without giving him so much as a glance.

“Follow me,” she said coldly.

At the end of the hallway, Clara stopped.

Julian stood behind her.

“Clara,” he said first, his voice so hoarse it barely sounded like his own. “I know I was blind and ignorant. But

everything Wendy did, I made her pay for it a thousand times over.”

“Did you see the messages I sent you?”

He took one step forward, then stopped, not daring to get too close.

“I know I was wrong. I’m willing to spend the rest of my life making it up to you.”

“You can hit me, curse me, or hate me. I don’t care, as long as it helps you let out your anger.”

He watched her turn around. There was no expression on her face.

Panic rose in him, and he reached out to take her hand.

“As for the baby, we can have another child. As long as you’re willing, we-”

“Enough.”

Clara shook off his hand.

“The baby?” She looked at him, her gaze terrifyingly calm. “Are you talking about the baby I lost after you

forced me into that psychiatric facility?”

Julian opened his mouth, but no words came out.

“Julian, there is no going back for us,” Clara said softly, each word clear. “You deliberately threw my brother’s

case. You kissed Wendy. You left me disfigured. You sent me to that facility. You caused Mia’s death, and

you killed my baby.”

“I remember every single one of those things.”

She paused.

As she said those words, she did not feel pain. Instead, there was a faint sense of release.

The things that had once left her wishing she were dead now sounded like someone else’s story when she

spoke them aloud.

“I hated you once,” she said. “But I don’t anymore.”

“I just want to move forward.”

Julian’s pupils tightened.

He stepped toward her like a man losing his mind, his voice trembling.

“Why do you have to be so cruel?”

His eyes reddened, and his voice grew louder.

“Do you really think none of this was your fault? If you had told me about Noah’s condition sooner, if you had explained everything to me sooner-”

“Explained everything to you?” Clara cut him off, and at last, something flickered in her eyes. “Did I not tell you enough?”

Julian froze.

“From the very beginning, I told you Noah could never have done something like that.”

“I begged you to see him, even just once, and you didn’t.”

“I gave you the evidence, and you threw it away without even looking at it.”

She looked at him without anger, only calm.

“Because all you could see was Wendy. You believed every word she said and refused to hear a single word

from me.”

Julian’s lips trembled. “No… I didn’t…”

Clara turned away.

“None of that matters anymore. It’s over between us. I hope you won’t bother me again.”

She started to walk away, and Julian instinctively reached out to pull her back.

A sharp slap cracked through the hallway.

Julian froze in place, his cheek burning.

Clara lowered her hand and looked at him.

“That slap was for what you owed me.”

“And it was for what you owed Mia.”

“Don’t follow me anymore.”

Julian’s eyes turned red in an instant.

Tears surged up, and he tried desperately to hold them back, but he could not.

He watched her. He watched her back as she reached the end of the hallway, turned the corner, and

disappeared from his sight.

“I’d rather you never let me go…” His voice was so hoarse it was almost inaudible, and his gaze darkened. “Anything would be better than you ignoring me like this…”

“You can’t ignore me…”

The hallway was empty.

Only his own echo remained.
