He Proposed… Three Years Too Late Chapter 08

Lucas signaled to the assistant behind him, and the assistant immediately scooped up our daughter and left.

Once she was gone, Lucas stepped closer, placing me behind him like a shield. He cupped my face, studying me carefully, then pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead.

“She was quite a handful,” he murmured. “I got back late, but I’m glad you’re safe.”

“Daughter?” Grayson’s voice trembled with disbelief. “You actually… have a daughter with him?”

He lunged at Lucas in a blind rage, trying to push him away, but Lucas shoved him back with equal force.

A punch flew. Grayson retaliated with a savage blow.

And then they were locked in a furious struggle.

I couldn’t just stand by. I wasn’t about to let Lucas lose. I dashed into the house, grabbed a broom, and slammed it into Grayson while he wasn’t paying attention.

“You… hit me?” Grayson gasped, stunned, turning to glare at me.

Lucas took the opportunity to kick him to the floor.

“You’re hitting me… for this man?”

“How many times do I have to say it?” I snapped, my patience gone. “Will you ever stop harassing me?”

Grayson suddenly burst into laughter, but I ignored him. My eyes stayed on Lucas, heart aching at the bruises on his face. I shot a glare at Grayson lying on the floor, my anger only growing.

After a long pause, Grayson slowly got to his feet. He straightened his collar, as if summoning every ounce of willpower, and ground his teeth as he shouted, “Even if… the child is yours and Lucas’s, I can accept it! I can be the child’s father!”

That was it-anyone would lose it. I strode forward and delivered a sharp, resounding slap across his face.

“Are you insane?” I hissed. “Stop harassing me! Don’t come to me about Caldwell Group anymore! I’ll put someone else in charge-and both you and Caldwell Group are finished!”

I left Grayson with no illusions about my resolve. Heartbroken and defeated, he limped away.

Caldwell Group had been a sinking ship for a long time. After one crisis after another, Grayson had been merely keeping it afloat with sheer will.

He’d assumed that out of old affection, I would extend a hand to save the company. But he hadn’t counted on me being ruthless-or having appointed a team to push the bankruptcy and acquisition forward.

Soon, my employees finalized the takeover, snapping up Caldwell Group at an extremely low price.

Originally, the amount I offered could have covered Grayson’s debts and left enough to keep the company afloat. But because he had delayed for so long, the value of Caldwell Group plummeted further. In the end, the final price wasn’t even enough to settle the debts.

What I never expected was that he would blame me for everything.

Worse, he dared to threaten my daughter.

It was her first trip back to the country since she was born, and naturally, she was full of curiosity. But Lucas and I were busy with work, so we had to leave her in the care of a nanny.

And that gave Grayson an opening. My daughter was taken!

A week later, I received a call from him.

“Come alone. Otherwise… your daughter’s life will be in danger.”
