After the Real Heiress Came Home, the Fake One Went on a Killing Spree Chapter 08

But he never expected that little country girl to turn things around and become the brightest star in the Hayes

family.

He hadn’t planned for that. So he finally brought the real Hayes daughter back from the countryside, hoping

to replace me.

But Brynn couldn’t rise to the occasion. So he had to find a way to get rid of me. He had Brynn take all my

shares, even the company. And she still couldn’t hold onto it.

Now the truth was out, and the evidence was solid. The Hayes called the cops and Derek was arrested. Paige said she would never forgive him. Brynn was so scared she dropped to her knees and begged her mother for

mercy.

But her parents were heartbroken.

Because Brynn knew what Derek was up to, and she still worked with him to steal the family’s assets. In the end, Grant and Paige gave her one house and fifty thousand dollars in cash, and kicked her out.

Brynn stood outside screaming that they were blind-rejecting their real daughter for some bastard.

I laughed.

I used to put up with her because she was still my dad’s blood. But once she was out of the family and still calling me a bastard? That I wasn’t gonna take.

I had my guys grab her. Beat her up good. Took the house deed right off her. I took that house back and moved her to some tiny condo in the suburbs a quarter of the size.

After that, she couldn’t shut up. She cursed me every day until I taught her a few more lessons. Then she

finally learned to keep quiet.

With everything settled, I finally let out a breath. Kelsey and I planned a trip.

I I

At the airport, Cole caught up to me, out of breath. “I helped you so much. How can you just leave me behind and go on vacation?”

Kelsey laughed at him. “Sloane’s a free person. She’s not your property. Why can’t she travel?”

“No, that’s not what I meant. I just-”

I cut him off. “Cole, you knew from the beginning that my uncle brought her back. You knew the whole plan.

But you stayed quiet. You didn’t warn me. You let me get blindsided.”

“Then you called me and hinted at ending things, and when I brought up breaking up, you said nothing. And

now you show up with this whole ‘chase me’ act?”

I thought about it after everything went down. It didn’t add up. Cole wasn’t like that. I’d known him more than

ten years.

He was always steady. Thoughtful. The way he acted-that wasn’t a decision he’d made lightly.

But his behavior was so strange. So I pressed Derek, and found out someone had investigated Cole and

warned him not to hurt me.

The only person who could get to him that quietly and tell him not to harm me was Cole himself.

He nodded. He admitted it. “Yeah. You and me, it was always a game. We were close friends, but also

competitors. You’re too strong. I just wanted to get the upper hand for once. I wanted you to come crawling

to me for help.”

“When I found out what was happening, I kept the file. I left it on the entry table. I hoped you’d see it. But you

never did. You came home and crashed.”

“You know I was really worried about you.”

His explanation was perfect. Flawless.

I shook my head and walked through security without looking back.

Cole’s eyes went red.

Kelsey looked at me. “You really don’t want him?”

“No. Men are like that. The more I push him away, the more he’ll chase. But if I give in the second he begs,

he’ll think I’m easy.”

“Do I look like a cheap date? I’m not giving him that idea again.”

Kelsey cracked up and gave me a thumbs-up. “You’ve got a real way with dogs.”

It’s not that I’m special. I just understand people. Cole, my family-none of them had ever truly let me in.

Now was barely the start.

I was doing this to make him see his own heart.

When I landed on a street in Paris, Kelsey wandered off with some gorgeous blond guy.

Left me alone in the wind.

I sat on a bench and let a street painter draw my portrait.

Then a self-portrait was handed to me. “Gorgeous, good?”

I looked past the drawing and saw a familiar face.

I smiled. “Not bad. Maybe a six out of ten.”

Cole raised an eyebrow. “Let me be your tour guide. I’ll make up the other four points. What do you say?”

“Alright.”

I took his hand. Cole pulled me close, and we walked through the foreign streets.

What I’ve always wanted is what I go after myself.

Everything. Right where I want it.
