“Dad, I told you she was nothing but trouble.” Julian’s face was a terrifying mask of rage as he tugged at his ruined collar. “Now look. She’s destroyed the Davis name. How are we supposed to show our faces in Washington after this?”

Olivia stood to the side, her eyes red, her expression a perfect portrait of distress.

“I just can’t believe it…” she said softly. “How could Chloe do something like this? Dad, we have to handle this immediately. The media will be all over it.”

My father finally turned his gaze on me.

“Chloe,” he said. “Fix this.”

In the midst of the chaos, I shook off Sarah’s hand. I didn’t retreat. Instead, I took a step forward.

The noise in the hall slowly died down.

I looked at Sarah. My voice was quiet, but it carried clearly through the room.
