“My good daughter… let Daddy get a look at you…”

I stepped back, neatly positioning myself behind Julian.

The man lunged, his hand closing on the lapel of Julian’s bespoke suit instead of me.

His filthy hands left greasy stains on the fabric, and the foul smell of him was overwhelming.

“What the hell is this?!” Julian exploded. “Security? Get them out of here! Now!”

Seeing this, Sarah rushed over and grabbed my arm, her nails digging into my skin.

“Chloe, how can you be so cruel? We came all this way just to see you. We only wanted you to acknowledge your own family. What did we do wrong?”

Catherine tried to intervene, but Sarah shoved her hard. My mother stumbled into a dining table with a cry of alarm.

The entire banquet hall descended into chaos.

My father was so furious his hands were shaking. He roared at the security guards, “Drag these two out! Immediately!”

As the guards rushed forward, Sarah was still screaming at the top of her lungs.

“Everyone, look! She’s ashamed of us because we’re poor! She thinks we’ll ruin her fancy life, so she won’t even acknowledge her own parents! What good is getting into Yale if you’re a person like that?”
