“It’s not that I don’t care about you. It’s just… we raised Olivia for more than ten years. That bond isn’t something you can just sever. And you know… someone in her birth family used to hit her. How could we send her back to that?”

My fingers tightened.

“You knew her birth family hit her?”

Catherine blurted out, “Of course we knew. Why else would we have kept her?”

A flicker of contempt crossed her face.

“How could someone from a family like that not have psychological problems? If Olivia went back, she would suffer horribly.”

I stared at her, the question burning on my tongue.

*Then why did you send me back to the agency and leave me there for years? You knew everything.*

But in the next second, she said:

“Olivia is different from you. We’ve cared for her since she was a child. She’s never really suffered, so she can be a bit fragile. You’re a little older than her. Can’t you be more tolerant?”

I stared at her for a long moment.

Catherine paused, then frowned.

“Chloe, why do you have to fight over every little thing?”

I almost laughed.

But the thought of the fifty thousand dollars in my bank account made me force a smile.

“Don’t worry.” I pulled my hand from her grasp. “I won’t fight Olivia for anything. I don’t want your love, either. Give it all to her. She will always be your perfect daughter. Is that good enough for you?”
