I Called Myself Ten Years Later—and Exposed My Cheating Boyfriend Chapter 09

I didn’t see Julian again until the summer after my freshman year.

I was hauling a case of sparkling water up the stairs when he came down with a trash bag. The year spent grinding through his PG year must’ve been rough. He looked thinner, worn down, but his eyes were sharper than I remembered.

“Chloe-“I cut him off.

“Don’t. We’re not close like that anymore.”

He caught himself. “Chloe.” Just my name this time.

“My counselor thinks my transfer application has a real shot at Bramford this time. When I move in, could you meet me on the quad? You’re the only person I know there. And I want to take one last

photo with you.”

I paused. Growing up one floor apart, we’d been inseparable.

Every year, Julian and I took a photo together. Seventeen years, all taken under the same tree in front of our building. The eighteenth was supposed to be on the Bramford quad. That one never happened.

I looked him in the eye. “I’m not wasting my time showing up for you. And I’m not taking that photo. If you get in, good for you.”

I turned and walked away.

Two weeks later, transfer decisions came out. Julian got his acceptance letter to Bramford.

His parents finally had something to brag about. They threw a huge cookout in the courtyard and invited half the building.

They left our apartment out. Payback, probably.

My mom was the kind of person who noticed every snub, but that day she didn’t seem to care. She sat on the couch knitting like nothing was happening.

“Let them have their party. We don’t need an invitation.”

“My daughter’s the valedictorian. We already had a bigger party than they ever could.”

She barely got the words out before shouting erupted downstairs.
