Patricia was already in my face.

“Tough talk on the phone, and then you follow us to the airport.”

“What, you found out Grace is here to meet her fiance and you can’t stand that she’s marrying well?”

Edward’s expression was pure disgust.

“We’re in public. Can you at least try to have some dignity?”

“Stop embarrassing the Virethorn Pack.”

I glanced up at the VIP pickup sign above my head.

“I’m here to pick someone up.”

Grace peeked out from behind Patricia, showing half her face.

“Sis, don’t lie.”

“This is the VIP terminal.”

“You run a flower shop. How would you even get in here?”

She covered her mouth, feigning a sudden realization.

“Unless… someone brought you?”

Patricia pounced on that immediately.

“I knew it.”

“No one to look after you once you left the Virethorn Pack, so of course you went and sold yourself.”

“Which old man is keeping you?”

I listened. All I felt was how absurd it was.

Seven years, and they hadn’t even updated their insults.

Thorne stepped forward, his face tight.

“Mom, don’t say that to Claire.”

Patricia whipped around to glare at him.

“You’re still defending her?”

Thorne looked at me.

“Claire, stop making a scene.”

“Just apologize to Grace, and I’ll talk Mom and Dad into letting you come home.”

I stared at him for a few seconds.

“Last night you showed up at my shop with a dead plant.”

“Today you’re asking me to apologize.”

“Thorne, you flip-flop with impressive rhythm.”

A few passersby stopped to watch.

Grace’s eyes reddened on cue.

“Sis, I know you hate me.”

“But this engagement is the biggest day of my life.”

“Why do you have to come and ruin it?”

Patricia’s heart shattered for her precious girl.

She swung her hand at my face.

“I’ll teach you a lesson on behalf of whatever old man is keeping you!”

I caught her wrist midair.

She froze.

I shoved her away hard.

Patricia stumbled two steps back, and Edward caught her.

“You’ve lost your mind!”

Edward pointed a shaking finger at me.

“Claire, you dare raise a hand to your mother?”

“She’s not my mother.”

I dusted off my hand.

“Touch me again, and I’ll make sure you’re famous at every airport in the Southern Territory.”

Grace bit her lip, then raised her voice.

“Sis, the person you’ve become is really scary.”

“We just want to help you.”

“If you need money, I can give you some.”

She pulled a card from her bag and held it out like she was tossing a coin to a beggar.

“There’s two hundred thousand on here.”

“Take it and stop bothering our family.”

Murmurs rippled through the onlookers.

“Isn’t that Grace?”

“The Virethorn Pack princess who’s getting engaged?”

“Who’s the other one? Her real sister?”

Grace heard the whispers and cried harder, milking every drop of sympathy.

She tried to press the card into my hand.

I didn’t take it.

The card fell to the floor.

She gasped immediately.

“Sis, if you don’t want it, fine, but why did you have to slap it out of my hand?”

This routine. So familiar it made my stomach turn cold.

She had always been like this.

Poured hot soup on her own hand and then cried that I burned her.

Slipped a necklace under my pillow and then said I stole it.

Threw herself down the stairs and then said I killed her pup.

I took a step forward.

Grace instantly recoiled, crashing into Patricia’s arms.

“Don’t touch me.”

The moment those words left her mouth, every eye in the crowd turned on me differently.

Patricia seized her opening and screamed.

“Everyone, look! This is my heartless birth daughter!”

“She made my Grace lose her pup, and now she’s causing a scene at the airport!”

I watched her mouth open and close, and suddenly the air felt thin.

For one terrible second, I was back in that night seven years ago.

Kneeling on the cold floor.

Everyone saying I was vicious.

No one letting me say a single word in my defense.

Just as Patricia lunged at me again, a voice cut through the noise from behind.

Cold as iron.

“Who wants to lay a hand on my Luna?”
